    Agricultural growth and productivity remain central to poverty reduction This is particularly true in Nepal, where agriculture employs two thirds of the labour force and provides almost one third of the gross domestic product Agricultural production is dominated by subsistence crop subsectors, with farms adopting a mixed farming system of crops, livestock, and agroforestry These sectors could be instrumental in rescuing the country from poverty if existing subsistence agriculture practices were transformed into modernized and profitable production systems Realizing the huge potential of the sector, the Government has developed and enforced an Agriculture Development Strategy 2015 2035 designed to increase women’s ownership and rights over land, to invest in improved farming practices, technology and mechanization, and to strengthen the opportunities for farmer groups and cooperatives to access credit and services.

    TECA is an FAO online platform for the exchange and sharing of agricultural technologies and practices for smallholder farmers and producers. The platform facilitates the transformation process in rural areas by making relevant and innovative technologies available to farmers in the field. In doing so, TECA further enhances the access to knowledge of smallholder producers in rural areas increasing their capacity to innovate and contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This catalogue promotes a set of successful innovations for farmers on the occasion of the FAO International Symposium on Agricultural Innovation for Family Farmers: Unlocking the potential of agricultural innovation to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, which will be celebrated in FAO Headquarters on 2123 November 2018. The technologies presented are concrete actions that have solved specific development challenges and promote sustainable and inclusive rural transformations. The technologies and practices are designed following the FAOTECA platform standards and have been tested and refined in the field. Each practice supports smallholder farmers and those providing advisory services to agricultural producers, to identify specific needs, select the correct practices and to implement technologies adequately. Developed with the help of FAO in cooperation with the FAO Departments of Agriculture and Consumer Protection, the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture and other key partners, the GIZ, ICRAF, IFOAM and Swisscontact, this catalogue aims at illustrating how sharing knowledge may unlock innovation throughout the farming process.

    The Government of Timor Leste recognizes the importance of addressing agricultural mechanization across agrifood chains in the country, and of developing public private community partnerships for reducing food losses, creating and diversifying business opportunities in rural communities, and reducing the work drudgery of both men and women, while increasing the resilience of smallholder farmers to face the effects of climate change In this context, the Government has developed an Agricultural Mechanization Policy Towards a Sustainable Agricultural Transformation (January 2018 in support of sustainable agricultural mechanization, which provides a strategic framework to guide and prioritize future key interventions in the country However, technical capacity was not sufficient to implement key interventions, such as the establishment of agricultural mechanization service centres and the provision of training to service providers at national and local levels The project aimed to improve farmers’ access to agricultural mechanization, by providing technical support for an effective assessment of the type, size and appropriateness of the existing machineries, and identifying input suppliers, as well as providing training for proper operation and maintenance of these machines.
