The research function is crucial for developing, testing, and adapting novel solutions for transforming agri-food systems in the region. Yet a study conducted on Malawi’s Agricultural Innovation System (AIS) revealed that the key actors in the system lacked capacity to facilitate and or engage in the research function effectively. To address this constraint, a policy dialogue informed by multi-level and multi-stakeholder approach was facilitated to identify obstacles and propose practical solutions. The Identified key obstacles to agricultural research in promoting innovation were: poor networking, insufficient skills to mobilize resources, absence of knowledge management and communication strategy, weak governance mechanisms, as well as use of an underdeveloped monitoring, evaluation and learning system. This brief includes policy recommendations to strengthen the research function within the AIS framework in Malawi.

The world is falling short of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set out in the 2030 Agenda, particularly the goal of achieving Zero Hunger (SDG2). Transforming agrifood systems to become more efficient, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable is vital to ending hunger and malnutrition, eliminating poverty, conserving and restoring ecosystems, as well as to mitigating and adapting to climate change. The Italian Group of Twenty (G20) Presidency in 2021 placed food security and nutrition as high priorities on the political agenda, as confirmed by the Call to Action to the entire international community for improving global food security and resilient agrifood systems. These efforts were further strengthened by the Group of Seven (G7) Italian Presidency in 2024. Advancing the implementation of the commitments of the G20, G7 and other global fora can contribute to tackling the above-mentioned challenges. This project supported the renewed Italy-FAO partnership, with the objective of realizing the ambitions of the G20 under the Italian Presidency and other global fora, which set key strategic directions in 2021 to tackle the urgent global challenges of hunger, malnutrition and climate change by transforming agrifood systems into more efficient, inclusive, resilient and sustainable frameworks.

Strengthening Capacities of the Government of Andhra Pradesh to Support Farmers to Adopt Sustainable Agri-Food Systems - TCP/IND/3807 2024

Agriculture is the primary source of livelihood for about half the population in India, which is also one of the main producers of milk, legumes, jute, rice, wheat and cotton. Due to soil erosion, burning of crop residues and a high use of chemical pesticides and fertilizers, it is essential to transition to sustainability to increase agricultural productivity and enhance both food and ecological security in the country. Agriculture in Andhra Pradesh depends mostly on rainfall, so the monsoon and seasonal conditions play a crucial role and have been highly affected by climate change, leading the State of Andhra Pradesh, as many others in India, to experience soil degradation, yield reductions and seasonal yield gaps, which have increased the costs of production. Furthermore, other safety concerns such as the COVID 19 pandemic affected agricultural value chains, giving rise to the need to modernize the agricultural sector with technologies and marketing strategies that will lead to profitable and sustainable production systems. To address these challenges, the Government of Andhra Pradesh (state government) launched farmer facilitation centres (FFCs) as an efficient platform to disseminate knowledge and provide farmers with services and assistance to improve year-round productivity, profitability and sustainability.
