The United Nations (UN) Decade of Ecosystem Restoration aims to foster a global movement to stop, prevent and reverse the degradation of ecosystems. The Decade offers an unparalleled opportunity for ongoing restoration efforts to be scaled up and for the creation of an enabling environment for further restoration action. To guide the implementation of the Decade, a Consortium was formed between the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), who is commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU)/International Climate Initiative (IKI), and three participating partners, including FAO, the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The Consortium developed a 2021 2030 strategy and implementation plan for the Decade, which consists of three goals and nine activities.

This publication provides guidance for reporting on the restoration of freshwater (inland water) ecosystems under Target 2 of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. It introduces a definition of “area under restoration” tailored to the unique characteristics of freshwater ecosystems and outlines key considerations for monitoring restoration efforts. By promoting consistent and coherent reporting, the guidelines aim to support countries in tracking progress, enhancing ecological outcomes, and ensuring that these critical but often overlooked ecosystems are effectively restored and maintained.
