This paper outlines the role of sociological analysis in the design of agricultural investment projects, particularly those being prepared for funding by multilateral financing institutions. It is intended mainly to assist mission leaders as well as sociologists, anthropologists and socio-economists working for the FAO Investment Centre. Some observations and recommendations will also be relevant to Governments, lending agencies and consulting firms engaged in agricultural investment project for mulation. It covers basic concepts and principles, sociological analysis required for different types of projects, the range of options for its integration in the investment project cycle, and provides a practical guideline for the design and implementation of diagnostic studies of target groups and their farming systems.

Forests are an important component of natural capital and deliver a broad range of ecosystem services that underpin human well-being. The extent and condition of forests in many parts of the world, however, have declined dramatically during the preceding decades due to unsustainable harvesting of timber, forest fires, urbanization, and conversion to agriculture. At the same time the acknowledged importance of forest ecosystem services (FES) continues to grow, particularly the need for climate change mitigation and adaptation. This paper is a background document developed for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) report on The State of the World’s Forests (SOFO) 2022. It reflects the results of a collaboration between FAO and the Foundation for Sustainable Development (FSD) to update the Ecosystem Services Valuation Database (ESVD). The compilation of systematically reviewed and standardized economic values of FES consolidated in the ESVD includes value estimates for all FES in nine forest ecosystem types and mangroves as per The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity (TEEB) and the System of Environmental-Economic Accounting (SEEA) classifications. This paper offers an improved understanding of the role of forests in sustainable development, and highlights the potential of forests to provide a pathway towards greater resilience and a green recovery.

This report offers an in-depth analysis of women’s roles and trade potential along the soybean-to-poultry value chain in the United Republic of Tanzania, within the context of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Developed under the FAO–ITC joint programme Empowering Women and Boosting Livelihoods through Agricultural Trade (EWAT), the study highlights both opportunities and challenges facing women engaged in this sector.Drawing on a combination of quantitative trade data and qualitative insights from Tanzanian stakeholders, the report examines production, trade flows, market trends, and the structural features shaping the soybean-to-poultry chain. It emphasizes women’s critical yet often underrecognized participation in farming, processing, and small-scale poultry enterprises, while identifying key barriers such as limited access to finance, technical skills, and fair market conditions.The study situates the United Republic of Tanzania’s position within regional and global value chains, revealing how strategic investments and stronger linkages to regional trade could unlock new opportunities for women entrepreneurs. It underscores that for women to meaningfully benefit from the AfCFTA, targeted policy measures and institutional support are essential.The report concludes with actionable recommendations aimed at strengthening women’s economic empowerment, including improved access to inputs and markets, gender-responsive infrastructure, supportive business environments, and enhanced participation in decision-making. By promoting inclusive and sustainable trade-led growth, the AfCFTA holds the potential to transform the United Republic of Tanzania’s soybean-to-poultry sector into a driver of prosperity for women and communities alike.
