Synopsis (short abstract) The 20th meeting of the FAO-WOAH Rinderpest Joint Advisory Committee (JAC) was organized under the umbrella of the GF-TADs, by its Rinderpest Secretariat from 24-25th April 2025 at FAO HQ, Rome, Italy. The Secretariat informed the group of the progress in the implementation of the post-eradication activities since the previous meeting, in April 2024. This included the site inspection of the two RHFs which had been first designated in 2019 (Institute of Veterinary Drug Control (IVDC), China, and Centre de coopération internationale en recherche agronomique pour le développement (CIRAD), France); the inspection of a candidate RHF (Indian Council of Agricultural Research – National Institute for High Security Animal Diseases, ICAR-NIHSAD, Bhopal); the collection and review of annual reports from RHFs and from countries holding Rinderpest Virus Containing Material (RVCM) outside Rinderpest Holding Facilities (RHFs); and the country-specific advocacy efforts undertaken in the previous year. Discussions focused on providing expert guidance to FAO and WOAH on critical post-eradication activities. This included the review of inspection reports for RHFs seeking (re)designation, assessment of ongoing and new research proposals. The JAC also discussed advocacy strategies for reducing RVCM globally and reviewed recommendations from the preceding RHF Network Meeting. A central aim was to ensure alignment between scientific oversight, risk reduction, and the broader objectives of the Global Rinderpest Action Plan (GRAP). The JAC advised on these topics and action items of the meeting are formulated.

    The 19th meeting of the FAO-WOAH Rinderpest Joint Advisory Committee (JAC) was organized virtually under the umbrella of the GF-TADs, by its Rinderpest Secretariat on 26th April 2024. The progress and achievements of the previous decade (2012-2023), and the recommendations recently issued by the GFTADs Management Committee (MC 47, 48), and the members of Rinderpest Holding Facilities (RHFs) network (3rd meeting, held in December 2023) presented by the Rinderpest Secretariat. The group was informed of the progress in the number of laboratories holding rinderpest virus containing material RVCM – from 44 laboratories in 35 countries in 2012 to 5 laboratories in 5 countries in 2024, in addition to 7 RHFs in 6 countries. The development of the Global Rinderpest Action Plan of the Rinderpest History Book, advocacy with countries holding rinderpest virus, support in implementing simulation exercises, creation of a system for review of research proposals, a framework for inspection of RHFs, establishment of rinderpest vaccine reserves, the development of SOPs for handling/destroying/shipping RVCM, the review/acceptance of over 10 research projects and the development of an array of communication and education tools were highlighted as key accomplishments. The meeting was also informed of the priorities for the second phase of the post-eradication era.
