    The document reports the activities carried out during the first year of the InDAM Project “Indicators for Sustainable Development of Aquaculture and Guidelines for their use in the Mediterranean” in support to the GFCM CAQ Working Group on Sustainability in Aquaculture (WGSA) and funded by the EU DG Mare. The project focuses on the practical use of the indicators for sustainable aquaculture and their adaptation to the Mediterranean Sea. The methodology applied for the identification of the prel iminary list of indicators was based on the PCI (Principles, Criteria and Indicators) approach and took into consideration the main outcomes and achievements of the recent projects carried out in the Mediterranean on the identification of indicators for sustainable aquaculture. The principles of sustainability and standards, in their four dimensions: governance, economic, social and environmental, and their relationship with aquaculture and its sustainable development in the coastal areas, are h ighlighted. The document also reports the results of the workshop on the Selection of indicators for the sustainable development of aquaculture in the Mediterranean Sea (27th-28th November 2008, Montpellier, France), the expert meeting on Indicators for the sustainable development of aquaculture in the Mediterranean Sea (24-26 February 2009, Montpellier, France) and the workshop on Guidelines and application of indicators for sustainable development of aquaculture (19-20 November 2009, Salammbô, Tunisia). The recommendations given by the WGSA are also included. The two pilot studies on the selection and evaluation of the indicators for aquaculture sustainable development carried out in Mugla, Turkey, and Monastir, Tunisia, are described. The data base on relevant indicators for sustainable aquaculture and the web portal on the InDAM Project activities hosted on the SIPAM website are presented.

    Strategy for the sustainable development of Mediterranean and Black Sea Aquaculture 2018

    Aquaculture is a flourishing industry which plays a key role in Mediterranean and Black Sea riparian countries, under a blue growth perspective. According to current trends in aquaculture production and to some national aquaculture strategies, the production of farmed seafood is expected to substantially increase in the region over the next decades. This calls for a careful planning in order to ensure the long term social, economic and environmental sustainability of the sector. In light of emerging global challenges, the international community has been involved for decades in a common endeavour in favour of sustainable development and cooperation. The 1995 Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and, more recently, the 2016 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals are two milestones of this widespread mobilization. In the Mediterranean and the Black Sea, the need to promote blue growth and develop sustainable aquaculture to ensure food security has been reiterated on several occasions. Acknowledging this growing trend and in line with its mandate, the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean has recently adopted Resolution GFCM/41/2017/1 on a strategy for the sustainable development of Mediterranean and Black Sea aquaculture. This regional strategy has been developed as part of an extensive consultation process. It envisages a future for Mediterranean and Black Sea aquaculture where a level playing field is achieved and the promotion of the sector is ensured so that it is more competitive, sustainable, productive, profitable and equitable. It is expected that it will help Mediterranean and Black Sea riparian countries in formulating harmonized aquaculture activities and action plans, paying special attention to current priorities and specificities at the local, national, subregional and regional level. Based on three targets and associated outputs and activities, the strategy will be implemented as part of a process that is consistent with national and supranational aquaculture strategies in Mediterranean and Black Sea riparian countries.

    This 2023 special edition of the GFCM’s flagship publication, The State of Mediterranean and Black Sea Fisheries, updates statistics and figures on the status and management of fisheries in the region and includes, for the first time, an overview of regional indicators on the aquaculture sector in Mediterranean and Black Sea countries. It aims to deliver useful and reliable data to a wide audience as an essential source of information on fisheries and aquaculture in the region and a key tool to support decision-making and monitor progress towards the goals set by the GFCM. The fifth instalment of its series, this publication covers topics of regional importance in the fisheries and aquaculture sectors over the course of seven chapters. Fleet status and capture fisheries production are the focus of the first two chapters, which include figures on fishing capacity and landings by country and fleet segment. Chapter three captures the human dimension behind the region’s fisheries through socioeconomic data on revenue and employment. In chapter four, information on discards is updated and categorized for the main fishing fleets in each GFCM subregion, along with details on the species that make up this important component of the catch. Chapter five reviews the status of fisheries resources, especially regional trends and trends in priority species, while chapter seven summarizes relevant existing and new adopted measures towards the sustainability of key fisheries and the protection of vulnerable ecosystems. Aquaculture is included in this edition for the first time, described in terms of volume and socioeconomic indicators in chapter six.
