Transforming agrifood systems is essential to meeting these challenges, with climate response being an intrinsic element. The need for more resilient systems that can sustain increasing demands in a setting of tightening constraints is evident. Resilience must be generated across environmental, social and economic domains, all the while maintaining the economic viability of agrifood systems to ensure that transition occurs in a just and fair manner. Climate technologies are a key enabler to support climate action and the sustainable transition of agrifood systems.The report highlights the needs for robust technology assessments to underpin climate technology identification for agrifood systems transformation that addresses all stages of agrifood value chains. This needs to be supported by capacity-building programmes, targeted financing and fed into the ongoing climate policy process. The capacity-building strategy and efforts are to be tied to the technology assessments, and identify suitable and correct skill sets, especially for smallholders and vulnerable segments of the population. -

The FAST initiative will be a multi-stakeholder partnership acting as an accelerator to transform agrifood systems to deliver triple wins: for people, for climate and for nature. FAST is designed as a catalyst, building on ongoing global and regional initiatives and coalitions to drive effective actions, and avoiding duplication.

2022This is the summary version of the FAO corporate report "The future of food and agriculture – Drivers and triggers for transformation", which aims at inspiring strategic thinking and actions to transform agrifood systems towards a sustainable, resilient and inclusive future, by building on both previous reports in the same series as well as on a comprehensive corporate strategic foresight exercise that also nurtured FAO Strategic Framework 2022–31. It analyses major drivers of agrifood systems and explores how their trends could determine alternative futures of agrifood, socioeconomic and environmental systems. The fundamental message of this report is that it is still possible to push agrifood systems along a pattern of sustainability and resilience, if key “triggers” of transformation are properly activated. However, strategic policy options to activate them will have to “outsmart” vested interests, hidden agendas and conflicting objectives, and trade off short-term unsustainable achievements for longer-term sustainability, resilience and inclusivity.
