Synopsis (short abstract) The report contains an evaluation of the working of the statistical system currently in use in Sri Lanka for the estimation of marine fish landings. The evaluation covers both technical aspects of the sample survey design as well as its working in the field. On recommends a single uniform design along with method of estimation for all sectors of marine fisheries. On field operations the report suggests that fully trained full-time field staff exclusively for the purpose of statistics collection with adequate supervision is highly preferable for successful operation of any survey system. The report also provides an interim scheme for the estimation of inland fish production.

    The Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries of the Government of the United Arab Emirates is deeply involved with the development of marine fisheries in the country and to develop a statistical system which will produce appropriate statistics to measure the growth of development taking place. The types of statistics necessary for such purpose are enumerated by considering each of the three phases of the fishing industry which are: catching fish; processing, curing and preservation; marketing and d istribution. Appropriate methods for collecting data for the estimation of these statistics are also discussed. The requirements of minimum staff are also indicated.

    The report briefly reviews the fishery resources situation in waters off' Kenya and the main commercial marine fisheries activities in the country. The production of fish and the planned development are also discussed. The report recommends that a project for development of prawn fishery be implemented. Its purpose would be to investigate on a semi-commercial basis the possibilities of deep-water shrimp trawling with an ultimate objective of setting up a sizable commercial operation. The report discusses the possibilities of tuna long-lining which because of serious technical difficulties could be conceived initially as a training operation on the basis of which a decision could be made at a later stage as to whether this type of fishery should be developed or not. The report also suggests that a test fishing operation for demersal and pelagic trawling be carried out to assess the possibilities of exploiting both the demersal and the pelagic of the North Kenya Banks.
