Synopsis (short abstract) The third meeting of the Planning Group for the Coordination of Acoustic Surveys off Northwest Africa was held in Dakar, Senegal, from 22 to 23 October 2004. The meeting was the third of its kind, following two meetings in Dakar, Senegal, from 26 to 28 October 2002 and from 28 to 29 October 2003. The scientists from the Northwest African region expressed their commitment to conduct their own acoustic surveys. All of the local research vessels conducted acoustic surveys in 2004. The a bility of running acoustic surveys in the sub-region has developed to a good level and focus in the future should be on the development of human capacity and to resolve the recurrent technical problems of trawl performance, noise discrimination and data storage. The timeframe of the continued surveys with R/V DR. FRIDTJOF NANSEN and the support through the Nansen Programme is unknown and high priority must therefore be given to the improvement of scientists skills in acoustic abundan ce estimation.

    The fifth meeting of the Planning Group for the Coordination of Acoustic Surveys off Northwest Africa was held in Dakar, Senegal, from 29 to 30 October 2006. All of the local research vessels had carried out acoustic surveys since the 2005 meeting of the Planning group. The analysis of the results of the coordinated parallel survey carried out in the fourth quarter of 2005 had shown that the variability of the allocation of recorded acoustic energy between the local vessels and the R /V DR FRIDTJOF NANSEN had been within acceptable limits. One coordinated survey was also carried out between the R/V ITAF DEME of Senegal and the R/V AL AWAM of Mauritania however no common report had been produced. The importance of doing so in the future was stressed. The countries are still working to find solutions with respect to problems related to noise levels and trawling as well as to ensure adequate funding for vessel operations. A plan to conduct a coordinated regional sur vey in October–December to continue the time series started with the R/V DR. FRIDTJOF NANSEN was made.

    The second meeting of the Planning Group for the Coordination of Acoustic surveys off Northwest Africa was held in Dakar, Senegal, from 28 to 29 October 2003. The general objective of the Planning Group is to plan the coordination of acoustic surveys in the region including intercalibration of research vessels and to act as a forum for discussion on issues important to acoustic surveys such as standardization of methods, acoustic research and training. A total of ten scientists from the Gambia, Mauritania, Morocco, Norway, Senegal and FAO participated in the meeting. Mr Abdoulaye Sarre (CRODT, Senegal) was elected chairman of the meeting for a 2-year period.The Planning Group noted that the three countries that possess their own research vessels had all conducted acoustic surveys in 2003 and that progress had been made in terms of planning and implementation of surveys as well as in data analysis and reporting. Nevertheless, there are still some issues that need to be addressed including the coordination of the national surveys to ensure complete coverage of the pelagic stocks, studies to reduce the noise level of the different research vessels, and the operation of the pelagic trawl to improve sampling of the target pelagic species. The importance of carrying studies on the Target Strength (TS) values of the main small pelagic fish species was also highlighted and a proposal for a two week training course was elaborated during the meeting.     This is the final report of the first meeting of the acoustic Working Group for northwest Africa (AWG) organized in Agadir, Morocco from 11 to 12 June 2019. The AWG brings together scientists involved in pelagic acoustic surveys from northwest African countries and aims to coordinate acoustic studies in the region, discuss common hydroacoustic issues, coordinate studies and research and share expertise with the ultimate aim of transferring knowledge and skills to new generations of acousticians. The EAF-Nansen Programme supported the implementation of the AWG and contributed to the development of the report. The report presents the content and outcome of this first AWG, including recommendations for acoustic methods to be used, studies to be conducted and operations of the group in the future. Ce document est le rapport final de la Première réunion du Groupe de travail acoustique en Afrique du Nord-Ouest (GTA) organisée à Agadir, au Maroc, du 11 au 12 juin 2019. Le GTA rassemble des scientifiques qui ont participé aux campagnes acoustiques sur les pélagiques des pays d'Afrique du Nord-Ouest et vise à coordonner les campagnes acoustiques dans la région, à discuter des problématiques communes en matière d’hydroacoustiques, à coordonner les études et la recherche et à partager l'expertise dans le but ultime de transférer les connaissances et les compétences aux nouvelles générations d'acousticiens. Le Programme EAF-Nansen a soutenu la mise en oeuvre du GTA et a contribué à l'élaboration du rapport. Ce dernier présente les thématiques et les résultats de ce premier GTA, notamment les recommandations formulées sur les méthodes acoustiques à utiliser, les études à mener et les futures activités du groupe.
