Avian influenza (AI) is a highly contagious disease that affects poultry, wild birds, and mammals and poses risks to animal and human health. The FAO warns of a heightened risk of outbreaks in Asia due to increased poultry trade and travel of people before the Lunar New Year in January 2025. This publication highlights AI trends, emphasizing zoonotic risks and the need for strict biosecurity measures. The report details AI outbreaks, driven by live poultry trade, wild bird migrations, and poor biosecurity. It stresses the importance of surveillance, rapid response, and enhanced disease prevention to protect livelihoods and public health.FAO urges immediate action, including border controls, improved biosecurity, and increased surveillance of domestic and wild birds. Collaboration between governments, industry, and international organizations is key to mitigating AI risks.
