No results found.This report describes attempts to introduce modified and new types of small fishing craft in the State of Kerala India. Three new types were constructed and tested and one type, a beachlanding craft available on the east coast of India, was introduced. All the craft underwent commercial fishing trials. The work was carried out during I Wc)-90.1989-90. The project. on request from the Government of India. was funded to the tune of US $ 139.000 by FAO under its Technical Cooperation Programme (TCP). The Kerala State Cooperative Federation for Fisheries Development Limited (MATSYAFED) was designated as the government agency responsible for the project execution. The Bay of Bengal Programme (BOBP) provided technical support, equipment and monitory services to implement the project. Besides the authors, other persons actively engaged in the project work were officials ofthc MATSYAFED, officers and technicians of BOBP, managers and staff of two boatyards and. not least, the fi sherfolk. The Bay of Bengal Programme (BOBP) is a multi-agency regional fisheries programme which covers seven countries around the Bay of Bengal - Bangladesh. India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Maldives, Sri Lanka. Thailand. The Programme plays a catalytic and consultative role: it develops, demonstrates and promotes new techniques. technologies or ideas to help improve the conditions of small-scale fisherfolk communities in membercountries. -

No results found.During the second half of 1979 and the first quarter of 1980 a survey was carried out in some fishing villages of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, to obtain information on the types of kattumarams used on the East Coast of India, the kinds of fishing gear used with the kattumaram, the methods of operation, catches and costs. This working paper presents the results of the survey. The text and the photographs give a brief summary of kattumaram types and their economic importance. A comprehensiv e pictorial record of the kattumaram types is also available. For those requiring more detailed data on materiats, construction, fishing gear, operations and costs, a comprehensive record of the information obtained during the survey is to be found in the appendices. The survey was carried out by Mr. T. R. Menon, Chief Instructor (Craft and Gear), Central Institute of Fisheries, Nautical and Engineering Training (CIFNET), Cochin. He was deputed to the Bay of Bengal Programme during July-S eptember 1979 and in March 1980. The Bay of Bengal Programme and FAO express their gratitude to the Government of India, Ministry of Agriculture, and to the Director of CIFNET for making Mr. Menons services available to carry out the work. -

No results found.This report reviews and analyzes the work of the Beachlanding Craft Development subproject of the Bay of Bengal Programme (BOBP). It briefly describes the development of these craft and their introduction on the east coast of India, analyzes their present status and discusses the results. The report was prepared by a consultant with wide experience of fisheries in the Bay of Bengal region, on the basis of documentation on the subproject, published and unpublished, as well as impressions gat hered during field visits to fishing centres in Andhra Pradesh and Orissa during August 1992. Assistance received by him in carrying out the field visits from Mr. S. B. Sarma of the Andhra Pradesh Directorate of Fisheries and information provided by fisheries officials, fishermen and boatyards are gratefully acknowledged. The development of beachlanding craft was sponsored by BOBP’s “Development of Small-Scale Fisheries in the Bay of Bengal” (GCP/RAS/040/SWE), a project funded by SIDA (Swed ish International Development Authority) and “Small-Scale Fisherfolk Communities in the Bay of Bengal”(GCP/RAS/118/MUL), a project jointly funded by SIDA and DANIDA (Danish International Development Agency), both executed by FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations).
