No results found.The 6th publication (Volume 3 Issue 1) of the Biosafety Newsletter contains information about key meetings and activities that took place from September 2020 through April 2021 in the National Biosafety Project (Implementation of the National Biosafety Framework in accordance with the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety). The cover page and the middle pages are dedicated to inform the audience about the several risk assessment guidelines developed through the project and the trainings on using the guidelines. In this publication, the international consultants share their experience with the National Biosafety Project. The back cover is dedicated to inform the audience about the launch of the Sri Lanka Biosafety clearing house (BCH) website by the Secretary to the Ministry of Environment, which is a key milestone of the project. The newsletter also mentions about online meetings and workshops held such as the 4th Project steering committee (PSC) meeting, various trainings including monitoring and inspection of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs), accessing information through the BCH and maintaining the Sri Lanka BCH. Also included are other biosafety awareness activities and the development of the biosafety communication strategy for Sri Lanka. No results found.The aim of the booklet is to provide information on biosafety to a cross section of the population including university academics, students, persons involved in research and development in various scientific disciplines, farmers and the general public. In broad terms biosafety refers to the potential risks associated with advances in biotechnology in particular risks associated with Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) also known as Live Modified Organisms (LMO). With regard to GMOs the potential benefits and risks to consumers of GM products are also given consideration. In addition guidelines and regulations for the safe release of GMOs, agricultural development using genetically modified crops, research and development in genetic modification, GM products in healthcare, impacts on GM crops on biodiversity & climate change and the importance in genetic modification in sustainable development in Sri Lanka are given importance in the booklet. Furthermore biosafety in laboratories, safe use & handling of microorganisms and containment of hazardous materials were also given consideration in knowledge dissimilated in the booklet. -

No results found.The 5th issue of the Biosafety Newsletter contains information about key meetings and activities that took place from December 2019 through to August 2020 in the National Biosafety Project (Implementation of the National Biosafety Framework in Accordance with the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety). The coverage of the 5th issue is dedicated to inform the audience about the progress made in relation to training of relevant stakeholders on monitoring and inspection of Living Modified Organisms (LMOs) and training on uploading information and maintenance of the Sri Lanka Biosafety Clearing House (BCH) website. The newsletter also mentions about biosafety awareness to the Ministry of Environment, Central Environmental Authority and undergraduates from the University of Colombo and University of Visual Arts. Further, it covers the 3rd Project steering committee meeting, meeting on biosafety awareness material and the six radio programs with experts from different areas on biosafety that were broadcasted live through the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation. The newsletter also includes synopses about biosafety in relation to labelling of LMOs, bioweapons, and accreditation of LMO testing laboratories in Sri Lanka and a cartoon depicting the current regulatory process of LMOs in the country.
