Synopsis (short abstract) A crucial part of the process of developing a CSA strategy is to understand barriers to adoption of CSA practices. Some barriers may be due to trade-offs that CSA practices engender in terms of resource use (e.g. crop residue management competing with livestock forage or labour intensiveness of some practices). However, it can also be that farmers would like to adopt certain practices, but do not due to institutional barriers, financial bottlenecks, or a lack of access to input or output markets . Understanding what drives adoption or dis-adoption of CSA practices is an empirical question that needs to be answered to make informed choices on guiding policies and investments. With an appreciation of potentially relevant CSA practices, the barriers to their adoption, their implications for farmers’ management of risk, and the benefits and costs of these different CSA practices, it is possible to combine this information to develop a CSA strategy that takes into consideration technical, in stitutional, and economic aspects. This will allow for a prioritization of CSA activities and create an enabling and coherent policy environment for agricultural development that takes climate change into account.

    This work provides a preliminary analysis of the key climate risks affecting agrifood value chains and opportunities for climate services that reach stakeholders involved in all stages of the value chain, from agrifood production to harvest, storage and refrigeration, processing and packaging, transportation, markets, trade and consumption. Climate services provide opportunities to effectively and comprehensively mainstream climate risk management across the entire agrifood value chain, in addition to increasing sustainability and efficiency in the face of changing climate conditions. This report provides significant primary information and recommendations on the development of climate services across the agrifood value chain with a view to systematically enhance sustainable and resilient opportunities. It also provides a basis for further research and investment funding in this area. Its findings could spark follow-up research and public and private investment.

    The adoption of climate-smart agriculture (CSA) practices at scale requires appropriate institutional and governance mechanisms to facilitate the dissemination of information and to ensure broad participation by relevant stakeholders and targeted beneficiaries. Among the drivers influencing CSA adoption, the understanding of how gender could influence the effectiveness of these instruments is capturing increasing attention in the literature. The aim of this note is to provide some insight on the data and tools necessary when dealing with the analysis of the effects of CSA on food security, focusing on a gender perspective.This note should serve as guidance for readers that would like to engage in the study of CSA and gender. In general, this note does not aim to be comprehensive and complete, but it indicates the main challenges and tools identifiable for this type of study.

    This manual is designed for a four-day training course on climate-smart agriculture that would take the learner from the basics of climate science to the impacts of climate change and the linkages among climate, agriculture and food security. It contains four modules, each addressing a particular aspect and consisting of several sessions that are held either in plenary, as one group, or in smaller work groups. The content and structure of this manual has been developed and tested through fieldwork involving extension agents and agricultural producers in Zambia, Malawi and Viet Nam.
