Synopsis (short abstract) The Government of the Federal Republic of Germany, through the Special Fund for Emergency and Rehabilitation Activities, contributed USD 500 000 to the FAO project, "Anticipatory action interventions to mitigate the negative effects of dry spells in the southern region of Malawi during the planting season 2023/24", which was implemented from 1 October 2023 to 31 March 2024. The project aimed to mitigate the potential negative effects of dry spells among vulnerable smallholder farming households and their livelihoods in Malawi.

    The Government of the Federal Republic of Germany contributed EUR 27.75 million (USD 30 385 017) to the FAO project, "Livelihood response to mitigate the impacts of drought on food security and livelihoods", which was implemented from 1 February 2023 to 31 December 2023.     The Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland contributed USD 3 750 000 (GBP 3 million) to the FAO project, "FAO’s El Niño preparedness, mitigation and response programme", which was implemented from 21 August 2023 to 31 March 2024. The project aimed to provide interim measures that enabled early preparedness of communities in areas identified as high flood risk to mitigate loss of life, livelihoods and assets in Somalia. The project successfully reached 33 339 households (233 375 people) and 144 technicians through flood mitigation activities, flood defence infrastructure rehabilitation and community preparedness and response.

    The Government of Japan contributed USD 1.5 million to the FAO project, "Emergency livelihood support for conflict-affected households in the Afar and Amhara regions of Ethiopia", which was implemented from 22 March 2023 to 21 March 2024. The project aimed to mitigate the impact of conflict on the lives and livelihoods of vulnerable communities in northern Ethiopia. The project successfully reached 58 167 households (290 835 people) through the provision of agricultural inputs, veterinary support and training to enhance food security, livestock health and community relations.
