Synopsis (short abstract) This book is open access under a CC BY-NC-SA 3.0 IGO license. The book uses an economic lens to identify the main features of climate-smart agriculture (CSA), its likely impact, and the challenges associated with its implementation. Drawing upon theory and concepts from agricultural development, institutional, and resource economics, this book expands and formalizes the conceptual foundations of CSA. Focusing on the adaptation/resilience dimension of CSA, the text embraces a mixture of conceptual analyses, including theory, empirical and policy analysis, and case studies, to look at adaptation and resilience through three possible avenues: ex-ante reduction of vulnerability, increasing adaptive capacity, and ex-post risk coping. The book is divided into three sections. The first section provides conceptual framing, giving an overview of the CSA concept and grounding it in core economic principles. The second section is devoted to a set of case studies illustrating the economic basis of CSA in terms of reducing vulnerability, increasing adaptive capacity and ex-post risk coping. The final section addresses policy issues related to climate change. Providing information on this new and important field in an approachable way, this book helps make sense of CSA and fills intellectual and policy gaps by defining the concept and placing it within an economic decision-making framework. This book will be of interest to agricultural, environmental, and natural resource economists, development economists, and scholars of development studies, climate change, and agriculture. It will also appeal to policy-makers, development practitioners, and members of governmental and non-governmental organizations interested in agriculture, food security and climate change.

The one-curriculum package has six parts, namely, Part 1: Climate-smart agriculture practices compendium, Part 2: Climate-smart practices catalogues, Part 3: Climate-smart Farmer Field School one-curriculum, Part 4: Climate-smart Farmer Field School standard operating procedures, Part 5: Climate-smart Farmer Field School data recording and governance, and Part 6: Climate-smart Farmer Field School digital support.This compendium, Part 1, outlines a range of potential CSA practices spanning the entire agricultural value chain, aligning with Jordan's National CSA Action Plan. By promoting climate resilience, it aims to boost food security, ensure sustainable agricultural production, and improve livelihoods. This resource serves as a practical guide for farmers and facilitators participating in the FFS modules, offering a pathway towards a more resilient and sustainable agriculture sector in Jordan.

The project on "Promoting climate smart agriculture and agricultural biodiversity for enhancing the adaptive capacity of vulnerable rural communities in old and new lands of Upper and Lower Egypt" will contribute to the adaptation to climate change of poor and vulnerable rural populations in the old and new lands of Egypt, namely in 36 Hayat Karima villages within Aswan, Beheira and Kafr El-Sheikh. This objective is to be achieved by developing and implementing nature-based and climate-resilient techniques – ensuring that no one relying on agricultural production and agri-food systems for their wellbeing is left behind (including landless, unemployed, underemployed or seasonally employed rural women and youth). The Project will thus reduce food insecurity induced by climate change and will improve livelihoods. To accomplish its objectives, the project will undertake several activities leading to three main outputs during a span of four years as indicated in this brochure.

This manual is designed for a four-day training course on climate-smart agriculture that would take the learner from the basics of climate science to the impacts of climate change and the linkages among climate, agriculture and food security. It contains four modules, each addressing a particular aspect and consisting of several sessions that are held either in plenary, as one group, or in smaller work groups. The content and structure of this manual has been developed and tested through fieldwork involving extension agents and agricultural producers in Zambia, Malawi and Viet Nam.
