Synopsis (short abstract) This report presents two investment cases that aim at maximizing nutritional gains from groundnuts for local communities in Turkana county in Kenya. The production and marketing of groundnuts are considered important for increasing the availability of nutritious food in Turkana county, given their dense nutritional content and culinary adaptability. They can be a source of energy and several nutrients such as fibre, fat, protein, vitamins and minerals. At the same time, the ability of groundnuts to tolerate droughts bears important production potentials in Turkana county as arid and semi-arid land (ASAL). In this regard, the report aims at contributing to the Turkana county Groundnuts Production and Marketing Strategy 2022–2027 by presenting two investment cases that can potentially increase the production and productivity of groundnuts, as well as ensure the availability of nutritious, quality and safe groundnuts and value-added products in the local market. The proposed investment cases have the objective of documenting good practices in support of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) that attract private sector investments and promote policy dialogue to increase availability and access to nutritious food for the most vulnerable, such as women in reproductive age and children aged under 5 years, by: (1) promoting access to certified seed, good agricultural practices (GAPs) and training and investment in appropriate post-harvest management practices to ensure food safety; and (2) supporting value addition of groundnuts through agroprocessing by farmer organizations operating cottage industries.

    This report presents findings from a community participatory study conducted to determine the seasonality of malnutrition and factors associated with malnutrition among children and women in Laisamis subcounty, Marsabit County. The study was conducted as part of the Livestock for Health (L4H) project. This project investigates the cost-effectiveness of livestock feeding and nutritional counselling during critical dry periods in reducing the risk of acute malnutrition in children below 5 years of age and in pregnant and lactating women (PLW). The L4H project is based on the observed patterns of increased acute malnutrition, associated with decreased milk consumption, among women and children in pastoralist communities. The study used a mixed methods approach to collect data from the two main communities (Rendille and Samburu) residing in Laisamis subcounty. The aim of the study was to understand the communities’ livelihood patterns and strategies, the observed temporal patterns of acute malnutrition in children and women, the factors determining the malnutrition patterns, and communities’ perspectives on practices and programming used to minimize malnutrition in the community. The report outlines the key findings from the three data collection methods used. (key informant interviews, focus group discussions and participatory epidemiology methods) and gathering information from men and women from each of the two communities separately.

    This policy brief presents the main findings of a situational analysis and assessment of women’s and youth’s ability to access community land in Turkana County, Kenya, with a focus on their rights. The brief highlights the fact that even though policy and legal frameworks provide for equal rights and nondiscrimination in access to land, women and youth still face many land-related challenges in Turkana County. It looks at the current situation regarding community land rights and examines the bar riers that women face trying to realize these rights. It further provides recommendations and strategies that can be used to strengthen and secure rights to community land for women and youth. This brief aims to inform policymakers, administrators, development partners, and local communities, including women’s and non-governmental organizations working to improve access to land for women and youth.
