Synopsis (short abstract) The investment case emphasizes the importance of investing in the fish sector to address food security, improve nutrition, and boost the economy. It presents fish as a key source of animal protein and essential nutrients for Malawi's population, particularly in rural areas where poverty and malnutrition persist. The focus is on innovative and sustainable processing techniques to enhance the nutritional quality of fish products, reduce post-harvest losses, and increase their availability in local markets.Two main pathways for investment are documented: solar tent dryers and raised sun-drying racks. Solar tent dryers, through evaporative drying, have demonstrated economic viability and potential for international quality standards. Raised sun-drying racks offer a cost-effective alternative, particularly for smaller-scale processors. Mitigation actions to reduce risks associated with these investments are outlined, including careful location selection, community engagement, capacity development, and adherence to food safety measures.This document also addresses challenges related to social inclusivity, economic affordability for consumers, and environmental sustainability. Strategies to overcome these challenges involve financial instruments tailored for small-scale processors and for micro-, small- and medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs), strengthened governance and capacity development, and a focus on sustainable fish management.In conclusion, investing in fish processing technologies presents a promising opportunity to tackle the multifaceted challenges facing Malawi's fish sector. The recommendations underscore the importance of promoting innovative processing techniques, integrating food safety and nutrition practices, and strengthening capacity and governance to ensure the success and sustainability of these investments.

    The need for developing suitable feeds based on locally available inexpensive ingredients has been widely recognized. Since lack of trained personnel is the main constraint in the development of fish feed technology in developing countries, the FAO/UNDP Aquaculture Development and Coordination Programme (ADCP) organized a special training course in fish feed technology at the College of Fisheries, University of Washington, Seattle, with a view to forming a small corps of fish feed specialists wh o could then be the focal points for future feed development programmes in their respective countries. The first report of the training course was presented in the report ADCP /REP/79/8. This present volume represents the edited texts of lectures presented by different specialists. Some additional material has been included for more complete coverage of the subject. Together, these texts may be considered to constitute a manual on fish feed technology, even though they were not prepared for that purpose. Twenty-six papers are included, under the general headings: (1) Digestion, physiology and anatomy; (2) nutritional bioenergetics; (3) nutritional biochemistry; (4) feedstuffs; (5) feed formulation; (6) feed manufacturing technology; (7) practical diets; and (8) quality control. Appendices include conversion tables, electrical data, and details on pelletability of selective feedstuffs, pellet die specifications, and equipment requirements for an 8 ton an hour feed mill.

    The Code of practice for fish and fishery products is intended for all those engaged in the handling, production, storage, distribution, export, import and sale of fish and fishery products. The Code will help in attaining safe and wholesome products that can be sold on national or international markets and meet the requirements of the Codex Standards. All related individual standards for fish and fishery products, as well as other related specific hygiene guidance, such as t he Guidelines on the Application of General Principles of Food Hygiene to the Control of Pathogenic Vibrio species in Seafood and the Application of General Principles of Food Hygiene to the Control of Viruses in Food (annex on Control of Hepatitis A virus (HAV) and Norovirus (NoV) in bivalve molluscs), can be found on the Codex website. The Code is a work in progress and a number of appendixes remain under development. This second printed edition contains revisions to the te xts adopted by the Codex Alimentarius Commission up to 2011.
