No results found.Small-scale fisheries in inland waters are particularly important for supporting local communities, providing livelihoods, and ensuring food security, especially in rural areas along or around existing water basins. However, these food systems are vulnerable to stressors such as pollution, habitat loss and degradation, draining wetlands, river fragmentation and poor land-management. Indeed, there is potential to increase synergies between these different sectors using “Integrated Water Resources Management” (IWRM). There are currently no global or regional frameworks between Regional Fishery Bodies (RFBs) and Basin Management Organizations (BMOs) in place to exploit synergies between inland fisheries and other water use sectors. Consequently, the overall objective of the first global workshop between RFBs and BMOs, held in Entebbe, Uganda from 6-8 December 2023 was to promote, discuss and establish an effective cooperation framework between BMOs and RFBs and to develop concerted approaches to integrate inland fisheries management into basin management, in the context of climate change, water scarcity, food security and ecosystem health. The workshop report will share the outcomes from this workshop which resulted in a consensus on the importance of employing multidisciplinary approaches, recognizing their value and the imperative need for such strategies. -

No results found.Following the endorsement of the SSF Guidelines by the FAO Committee on Fisheries (COFI) in June 2014, FAO is now engaging in implementation planning through a participatory process and in accordance with COFI recommendations. COFI proposed the establishment of an SSF Guidelines Global Assistance Programme (GAP) and an outline of this GAP was presented to COFI The workshop was an important step in terms of guidance for consolidating the overall implementation approach for the SSF Guidelines. It is evident that there is an overall willingness to work towards a coherent, coordinated implementation by all stakeholders, based on the guiding principles of the SSF Guidelines themselves. It was confirmed that FAO has an important role to play in terms of supporting and facilitating the implementation, but also in providing technical support and project implementation, based on demand. FAO is looking forward to continuing working on the development of the GAP framework, based on commitment and professionalism and in close collaboration with partners and stakeholders. -

No results found.Following the endorsement of the Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries in the Context of Food Security and Poverty Eradication (SSF Guidelines) by the FAO Committee on Fisheries (COFI) in June 2014 and in line with paragraph 13.6 of the document itself, promoting the development regional plans of action for their implementation, a regional workshop was held in Eastern Africa to discuss implementation of the SSF Guidelines. The East Africa Consultation Workshop on im proving small-scale fisheries in the context of food security and poverty eradication was held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on 15-18 September 2015. It was hosted by the FAO Sub-Regional Office for Eastern Africa. The workshop was attended by a total of 38 participants from Burundi, Djibouti, Ethiopia Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda, including representatives of governments, regional organisations, Regional Fishery Bodies (RFBs), Civil Society Organization (CSOs), NGOs, res earch institutions, academia, other relevant other non-state actors as well as FAO staff and resource persons. The workshop noted that small-scale fisheries employ the bulk of fishers and fish workers in the region and contribute substantially to food security and livelihoods through their role in providing nutritious food and generating local and national incomes. Inland fisheries are particularly important in many countries of the region. There are many aquatic resources, including freshwater and marine resources, that are shared by two or several countries and the regional aspects of small-scale fisheries are hence important. The overall objective of the workshop was to facilitate the understanding of the principles of the SSF Guidelines and their application in order to support sustainable small-scale fisheries and Blue Growth. During the three and a half days, participants examined the current status of small-scale fisheries in the region and shared experiences through country and topical presentations, and discussed priorities and actions for implementing the SSF Guidelines at regional and national levels.
