JOINT FAO/WHO FOOD STANDARDS PROGRAMME

CODEX ALIMENTARIUS COMMISSION

Twenty-sixth Session, FAO Headquarters, Rome (Italy), 28 June – 7 July 2003

DESIGNATION OF COUNTRIES RESPONSIBLE FOR APPOINTING THE CHAIRPERSONS OF CODEX COMMITTEES AND TASK FORCES

Table of Contents

BACKGROUND

1. In accordance with Rule IX.10 of the Commission’s Rules of Procedure and with established practices, the Commission is required to designate, at each Session, the Member country responsible for appointing the Chairperson of Codex Committees. The Criteria for the Establishment of Subsidiary Bodies of the Codex Alimentarius Commission state that the Rules of Procedure shall apply mutatis mutandis to ad hoc Codex Intergovernmental Task Forces and therefore the same action is required for these subsidiary bodies.

2. At its 23rd Session (1999) the Commission established three ad hoc Intergovernmental Task Forces requiring them to provide final reports to the present session of the Commission. In accordance with the Criteria for the Establishment of Subsidiary Bodies of the Codex Alimentarius Commission these Task Forces “shall be dissolved after the specified work has been completed or when the number of sessions or the time limit has expired”.1
