PREFACE
The Technical Consultation on Aquaculture in Rural Development reported in this document was an activity of ALCOM - Aquaculture for Local Community Development Programme.
ALCOM is executed by FAO with a preparatory phase funded by Sweden (SIDA). It is an inter-regional programme, although initially focusing its activities on the countries of Southern Africa.
The objective is to develop, test, and demonstrate methods and techniques by which rural people can improve their standards of living through aquaculture.
The mode of work is to deal with problems identified for aquaculture development in a rural/community development context through in-depth studies, training and small pilot projects, the results of which are intended to be applied in larger scale development efforts.
