ABSTRACT SMALLHOLDER VEGETABLE PRODUCTION REQUIRES A SMALL PLOT OF LAND, SOME WATER, LABOUR AND MINIMAL CAPITAL. Vegetables that are easy to grow provide economic, social, gender and nutritional advantages that can significantly contribute to livelihood diversification and sustainability. By highlighting the basic and easy to grow vegetable production systems, potatoes, sweet potatoes, onions and shallots, and also more specialised vegetable production systems, such as tomatoes and greenhouse vegetable cultivation, it is hoped that policy-makers and development personnel will recognize the opportunities that are available for producing and marketing quality vegetables. |
