Abstract

A workshop on Hatchery Management organised by MEDRAP II in collaboration with Cultivos Piscicolas Marionos S.A. (CUPIMAR) was held in Cadiz-Spain from 8 to 11 April 1992.

The workshop was dealing with all the aspects of the hatchery management such as architerctural design, production strategy, economic, financial and marketing aspects, etc…

Several factors determining the correct sizing of a hatchery were considered. The most important criteria in hatchery management were also examined : the use of seedlings, eggs production, adopted technology standards, multispecific or monospecific hatchery, etc…

It was emphasized that:

-   the internal organisation of a hatchery must follow and optimise the functional relationships among the various steps of production.

-   careful attention must be paid to integrate hatchery design and construction with some aspects of site location as overall technical level of the country, staff formation level, local availability of service and spare parts of equipment and after sale assistance and routine maintenance.

-   high levels of production in reliable conditions may be achieved when the following requirements are fulfilled : water quality, and processing, sanitary care prevention of mollusc illness and their adequate treatments.

-   the hatchery management, infrastructure should be directed towards the efficiency of the installations and their maintenance in clean conditions.

It was recommended at the end of the workshop that the basic working mechanism for further cooperation in the field should rely on the training, transfer of technology, rational utilisation of the regional potential, the preservation of natural resources, the conservation of the ecosystem and protection of the environment.

The Organisation of Producers should also control the production level in connection with markets in the region and investigate new markets and promote the consumption of aquaculture food.

Acknowledgements

The Editor of this document would like to thank CUPIMAR (Cultivos Piscicolas Marinos S.A.), namely Mr. Lazaro Rosa Jordan, the Managing Director, for their support to the organisation of this activity. The involvement of the private sector from Spain, Portugal, Cyprus, Egypt, Turkey, Tunisia, Morocco, Malta and Bulgaria gave the workshop fruitful results.

Thanks are also addressed to the participants from the Member/Associated countries, and the experts from the various international institutions who accepted to contributed to the seminar.

Note from the reviser

The revision and publication of this document could only be done a long time after the closure of the project. This has led to some difficulties in finalising the documents and implementing corrections, because authors and contributors as well as some of the original material or files were no longer available.

Therefore contributions from participants and session papers annexed to most of the documents were left in their original form. No language corrections were introduced, the content was not modified and left under their respective authors' responsibility.

Considering the above, we hope that the reader will understand that a standard of publication could not be maintained on a level as high as we would have liked it to be.
