WORKING PARTY ON THE MANAGEMENT OF WILDLIFE AND PROTECTED AREAS FIFTEENTH SESSION (Accra, Ghana, 16-18 February 2004) |
DATES AND VENUE
1. At the kind invitation of the Government of Ghana, the Fifteenth session of the Working Party on the Management of Wildlife and Protected Areas of the African Forestry and Wildlife Commission will be held from 16 to 18 February 2004. It will be followed by the Fourteenth session of the African Forestry and Wildlife Commission from 18 to 21 February 2004. These two meetings will take place at the Conference Centre of Novotel Hotel, located in the City Centre of Accra, Ghana.
2. The opening Ceremonies will start at 09.30 hours on Monday 16 February for the Fifteenth session of the Working Party on the Management of Wildlife and Protected Areas, and at 15.00 hours on Wednesday 18 February for the Fourteenth session of the African Forestry and Wildlife Commission.
REGISTRATION AND ENROLMENT
3. Participants are requested to kindly complete the attached registration form and to send it as soon as possible to the two addresses indicated on the form. Enrolment into sessions will take place from 08.30 to 09.30 hours on 16 and 18 February respectively, at the Conference Centre of Novotel Accra.
DOCUMENTATION
4. The documents will be made available to participants in both English and French, and as much as possible sent out before the sessions. Delegates are requested to please carry the documents to the meetings since very few copies will be available during the sessions.
CLIMATE/CLOTHES
5. Ghana is situated on the West of Africa, bordering the Gulf of Guinea, between Cτte dIvoire, Togo and Burkina Faso. In February, its tropical climate is a bit warmer and drier, as this month forms part of the dry season, which usually starts in mid-December and ends in March. During this period it is advisable to wear light summer type of clothing.
6. The official spoken language is English, although other African languages, including Twi, Ga and Ewe, are widely spoken.
FORMALITIES FOR ENTERING GHANA
Visas
7. Participants are advised to contact as soon as possible the nearest Embassy or Consular mission of Ghana in their respective countries, to know about immigration conditions and the necessity for a possible entry visa to Ghana.
8. For delegates coming from countries where no Ghanaian diplomatic representation exists, the National Organizing Committee could help to obtain entry visa on arrival at the airportprovided that passport particulars are sent at least three weeks before the arrival date. It must be noted, however, that a visa fee of US$100 may be required, except for holders of Diplomatic Passports.
Health
9. Persons wishing to enter Ghana are kindly requested to inquire before travelling about conditions required by the Government of Ghana concerning International Vaccination Certificates issued in accordance with World Health Organization (WHO) rules. At present, these conditions are as follows:
Yellow Fever: vaccination required for travellers of all countries.
Vaccinations are required for other diseases: Hepatitis A, Tetanus, Meningitis, Poliomyelitis and Bliphteria.
Flight connections
10. Most of the international air companies have weekly and daily flights to the Kotoka International Airport of Accra: Ethiopian Airlines & Kenya Airways from East Africa; South African Airways from Southern Africa; Air Ivoire, Ghana Airways & Bellview Airlines from West Africa; Egypt Air, Middle East Airlines and most of the major European Airlines, except Air France.
11. Participants having confirmed the date, time and flight number will be met at the airport on their arrival.
MONEY AND EXCHANGE
12. Most convertible currencies can be carried to Ghana. They will have, however, to be declared on arrival. The exchange rate of the Ghanean Cedi (’) in December 2003 is as follows: US$ 1 = ’ 9,000, or 1 Euro =’ 10,100 .

STUDY TOURS AND EXCURSIONS
14. An optional field trip to the Kakum National Park, located in the Central Region of Ghana and about three (3) hours drive from Accra, will be organized on the morning of Sunday 22 February 2004.
HOTEL ACCOMMODATION AND CATERING
15. Different categories of hotels have been identified and rates negotiated for all participants. Main criteria in the choice of these hotels were: (i) quality-price ratio; (ii) proximity to the city centre and restaurants; and (iii) distance between hotels (picking up of participants). Participants can make reservation directly or have reservation made for them upon request (at least three weeks in advance) at the following hotels:

16. Participants would be provided with lunch at the venue of the meeting of the Commission.
TRANSPORTATION
17. Each morning a bus will pick up participants from their hotels at 08.00 hours to the venue of the meetings, and back to their hotels in the evening.
