Different technical options are known to enhance soil productivity, such as through increasing soil organic matter, nutrient enhancement, water harvesting, and controlling soil erosion. This paper provides the background for an Initiative to catalyse global support on a scale sufficient to assist African countries to implement actions that would lead to the regeneration of soil productivity on private, public and communal lands. The paper was a collaborative effort of the World Bank and FAO.
