Abstract
The workshop on Diversification of Aquaculture Production, organised by MEDRAP II in Malta on July 1–6, 1991, was dealing with the research and experimentation on new reared species and new rearing technics in both open and closed systems, with reference to what is applied in the Mediterranean.
The workshop was aimed at exchanging experiences and solutions to different problems, updating information, setting-up the first step to the constitution of the Research Sub-Network and the elaboration of a common strategy in the matter.
The main objectives of diversification of species were to improve the productivity, to preserve some precarious species by increasing their capacity to resist against health problems and to satisfy marketing and nutritional needs, to produce cheaper animal proteins and to develop the exploitation of local potentialities.
Following the presentations which were split under three items : i) species diversification, ii) technology diversification, and iii) and marketing diversification, several recommandations were adopted after discussions :
- to improve the technology of new species such as Puntazzo puntazzo Dentex dentex, Seriola, etc… and the aquaculture of local species for specific markets:
- to reduce the production cost; and to establish among all Mediterranean and EC countries concerned, precise norms for quality, freshness, packing, labelling, etc…
- to enlarge the total market by direct commercialisation and investigations.
Many technical communications were presented by several invited experts to review the present and future technical aquaculture possibilities in the region.

Note from the reviser
The revision and publications of this document could only be done a long time after the closure of the project. This has led to some difficulties in finalising the documents and implementing corrections, because authors and contributors as well as some of the original material or files were no longer available.
Therefore contributions from participants and session papers annexed to most of the documents were left in their original form. No language corrections were introduced, the content was not modified and left under their respective authors' responsibility.
Considering the above, we hope that the reader will understand that a standard of publication could not be maintained on a level as high as we would have liked it to be.
