Synopsis (short abstract) Small pelagic fish species found in lakes and introduced to reservoirs dominate by volume and contribute some of the most important inland fisheries in Africa with steadily increasing catches and additional potential. This circular reviews the status and importance of the pelagic fish and fisheries, together with small fish in general, for sustainable and healthy livelihoods in Africa. It reviews the biology and biological production of the most important pelagic species in lakes and reservoirs as well as the impacts of environmental and climatic variation on the stocks of these species. It examines and discuss the various capture techniques together with potential of improvements in the fisheries and associated processing and national and regional trade within Africa. The knowledge generated by the circular will be usefull for policy makers and development practitioners to design and implement more effective policies, strategies and programmes that will contribute to reducing the food insecurity and conflicts that currently affect the people in sub-Saharan Africa.

    This report contains ten case studies which serve as background for a synthesis report published in FAO Fisheries Technical Paper 426/1. They have been conducted in five medium sized lakes in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Five of the case studies focus on biological and environmental effects while the remaining five are concerned with historical and sociological analysis. In different ways all the case studies focus on some of the following three featur es, relevant for the management of freshwater fisheries in the South Africa Development Community (SADC) region: – How has fishing effort developed in these lakes over the last 50 years? Despite a considerable increase in the total fishing effort in the region, the report demonstrates great variation in effort dynamics both in time and place. Most papers distinguish between changes related to the number of people and changes in technology and investment patterns and show that most of the increases in effort have been population-driven. Only in the case of Lake Malombe have changes in effort mainly been investment-driven. – What causes the changes in fishing effort?

    The twentieth session of the FAO Working Group on the Assessment of Small Pelagic fish off Northwest Africa was postponed until 2021 due to the global pandemic situation in 2020. The 2021 meeting was divided into two digital sessions, and updated the assessments to 2020 (or 2019, if no 2020 data were available). A separate digital meeting was convened to discuss 2019 surveys for the region from the R/V Dr Fridtjof Nansen and review the progress of research using the data collected from these surveys. La vingtième session du Groupe de travail de la FAO sur l'évaluation des petits pélagiques au large de l'Afrique du Nord-Ouest a été reportée à 2021 en raison de la situation pandémique mondiale en 2020. La réunion de 2021 a été divisée en deux sessions numériques et a mis à jour les évaluations jusqu'en 2020 (ou 2019, si aucune donnée 2020 n'était disponible). Une réunion numérique distincte a été convoquée pour discuter les campagnes effectuées en 2019 par N/R Dr Fridtjof Nansen dans la région et examiner les progrès de recherches à l'aide des données collectées à partir de ces campagnes.
