The Addressing Fisheries and Aquaculture in National Adaptation Plans Supplement provides technical guidance on the integration of fisheries and aquaculture in the formulation and implementation of National Adaptation Plans (NAPs) and complements FAO’s Addressing agriculture, forestry and fisheries in National Adaptation Plans – Supplementary guidelines (referred to as NAP-Ag Guidelines, FAO 2017a). It aims to draw the attention of policy makers and government officers responsible for NAP planning and processes generally, as well as fisheries and aquaculture officers at country level, specifically. It collates and analyses relevant information from fisheries and aquaculture to support the sector’s ability to take part in national climate change adaptation planning processes.

National Adaptation Plans (NAPs) serve as vital policy instruments for guiding countries’ efforts to reduce vulnerability and build adaptive capacity and resilience to climate change impacts. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) plays a central role in supporting adaptation efforts and advancing NAPs globally. Through technical support, institutional support, improving access to finance, and the provision of knowledge products and tools, FAO supports developing countries in the formulation and implementation of NAPs that increase resilience in agrifood systems across FAO mandate areas (agriculture, forestry and fisheries).

Climate change adaptation requires the use of good agricultural, forestry and fisheries practices to meet changing and more difficult environmental conditions. To make sure appropriate information is shared and put into practice, FAO works to build capacities at the national, local and community levels to raise awareness and prepare for climate change impacts. At the government level, the goal is to mainstream climate change strategies and actions in agricultural policies and programmes to reduc e vulnerability and provide local communities with site-specific solutions. FAO'S INTERDEPARTMENTAL WORKING GROUP ON CLIMATE CHANGE sets the context for interdisciplinary technical and policy expertise. Ongoing activities with rural communities and research institutions provides practical information to countries through: global data sets and assessing scientific evidence; analytical tools and models; crop forecasting and impact monitoring; information dissemination on climate change-related ris ks; providing a neutral forum for best practices, negotiations and technical discussions.
