Hidden dangers from pesticides and obsolete pesticides in Tajikistan 2022
    Also available in:

This leaflet is developed to inform affected and vulnerable communities who live nearby a mini-landfill in Tajikistan about how they can minimize the negative impacts of mini-landfills. Mini-landfills contain obsolete pesticides inherited from Former Soviet Union. These hazardous chemicals are often stored in deteriorated containers or buried in those mini-landfills, where leakages contaminate the soil and water and pose a high risk for human health and the environment.

Caribbean nations, in particular SIDS, have been traditionally vulnerable to the entry of potentially harmful, unregistered and unregulated pesticides. In many of these countries, the legislation and regulations for managing pesticides are fragmented and at various stages of development. Under the overall objective to promote sound management of pesticides in the Caribbean, the project kick-started various activities covering pesticide life-cycle management in the region, drafted a regional model pesticide legislation and facilitated different vital elements. It specifically contributed to the collection and shipment of obsolete pesticides (319 tonnes) from all 11 project countries and polychlorinated biphenyls (54 tonnes) from four countries. However, it has not been able to successfully replicate, scale up nationally and build capacities with government stakeholders evenly across all countries. Further follow-up and support are required to ensure sustainability and impact in the region and the project countries and thus the engagement of the private sector and civil society organizations will be critical.

Lessons from two decades of tilapia genetic improvement in Africa 2022
    Also available in:
    No results found.

This summary briefly describes the main steps for establishing a tilapia breeding programme, together with the specific lessons learnt in Egypt. African aquaculture has increased in importance since 2000 due primarily to dwindling capture fisheries and its demonstrable success in Egypt, which is the only African country among the world’s top ten producers of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). The success of tilapia aquaculture in Asia can in part be attributed to the Genetically Improved Farmed Tilapia (GIFT) project - a breeding programme carried out by WorldFish.

    Human-wildlife conflict

This factsheet on human-wildlife conflict focuses on elephants (Loxodonta africana) and was produced by the Sustainable Wildlife Management (SWM) Programme. The SWM Programme aims to reconcile the challenges of wildlife conservation with food security and rural socio-economic development. To meet this objective, an innovative behaviour change approach is being developed to address human-wildlife conflict (HWC) and create a more balanced coexistence between people and wild animals. The SWM Programme is being funded by the European Union with co-funding from the French Facility for Global Environment (FFEM) and the French Development Agency (AFD). The initiative is coordinated by a dynamic consortium of four partners, namely the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the Center for International Forestry Research and World Agroforestry (CIFOR-ICRAF), the French Agricultural Research Centre for International Development (CIRAD) and the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS).
