Aquaculture is a rapidly expanding sector of the global economy with an average growth rate of 8.8 percent per year since 1970. Development of the industry under various national and regional jurisdictions has resulted in a diversity of regulatory frameworks. This manual has been produced in response to a request from FAO Members for guidance on the application of risk analysis with respect to aquaculture production. Aimed at decision-makers and senior managers involved in the sector in FAO Member States, this manual provides an overview of the considerations for risk analysis in decision-making for all types of aquaculture, including the impacts of aquaculture operations on environmental, socio-political, economic and cultural values as well as the impacts to aquaculture from outside influences. This manual is expected to promote wider understanding and acceptance of the applications and benefits of risk analysis in aquaculture.

This technical paper provides a comprehensive overview of feed and fertilizer use for sustainable aquaculture development in developing countries. It comprises a series of review papers, including eight country reviews from Asia, six country reviews from Africa, one case study report from Asia, three regional reviews (Asia, Latin America and sub-Saharan Africa), a global synthesis as well as the final report of the FAO Expert Workshop on Use of Feed and Fertilizer for Sustainable Aquac ulture Development, held in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province, China, 18–21 March 2006. The country reviews provide an overview of the current status of aquaculture, a synthesis of the availability, accessibility and use of feed and fertilizer resources in relation to the diversity of farming systems and practices and an analysis of the nutritional, economic and social constraints of using these inputs. The regional reviews provide a synthesis of the country reviews by considering production tr ends and feed and fertilizer use from a wider geographic perspective and also analyse the projected expansion of the aquaculture sector in relation to the future availability of input commodities. The global synthesis provides a general overview and summarizes the future challenges facing the sector with respect to the use of feeds and fertilizers.

Viruses in Food: Scientific Advice to Support Risk Management Activities: Meeting Report. Microbiological Risk Assessment Series (MRA) 13 2008

This report draws attention to the threat of viruses as a risk to public health when they are present in food. Viruses require special attention because they behave differently from bacteria, and because currently used control measures typically either have not been validated and there is not a good understanding of their efficacy towards viruses, or are not effective in controlling virus contamination. Data from recent studies have shown that foodborne viral infections are very common in many parts of the world despite the measures already in place to reduce bacterial contamination.
