    In September 2014 the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) convened the International Symposium on Agroecology for Food Security and Nutrition. This was followed in 2015 by three regional meetings in Brazil, Senegal and Thailand. These meetings brought together stakeholders from academia, policy and civil society to facilitate better understanding of the role of agroecology in contributing to food security and nutrition. The meetings confirmed that FAO’s approach to agro ecology should be based on regional and local realities as well as economic, social and environmental conditions. In order to continue to develop this regional approach a further symposium on agroecology the International Symposium on Agroecology for Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems in China was organized by the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS), FAO, and Yunnan Academy of Agricultural Sciences (YAAS), with the support of the Government of France.

    The International Symposium on Sustainable Animal Production and Health – Current Status and Way Forward, organized by the Animal Production and Health Section of the Joint FAO/IAEA Centre of Nuclear Techniques in Food and Agriculture, found its departing point in these challenges. Within the five days of discussions and debates, the Symposium comprised a panel discussion and eight thematic sessions: a) molecular tools for animal production and health, b) advances in vaccinology, c) emergency preparedness and response, d) zoonotic diseases, COVID-19 and ZODIAC, e) enhancing livestock’s contribution to One Health and the Sustainable Development Goals, f) challenges for better livestock production in the developing world; g) advances in biotechnologies for improving livestock breeding and feeding, h) application of improved technologies for sustainable livestock productivity: the way forward. The symposium, held virtually, was attended by more than 3000 participants and observers from more than 160 countries, as well as by representatives of international organizations including the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE). The more than 50 presentations were related to research and development actions for the sustainable improvement of animal production and health, emphasizing the role of nuclear technologies. These presentations were complemented by more than 145 synopses and posters from the participants, which were made available in a Book of Synopses. This publication is a compilation of the contributions emanating from the symposium. It encompasses the three opening speeches of the IAEA Director General, Mr. Rafael Mariano Grossi, the FAO Director General, Mr. Qu Dongyu, and the OIE Director General, Ms. Monique Eloit; and 47 papers from participants and speakers, which have been peer-reviewed by FAO and IAEA colleagues, independent outside experts and the Scientific Committee. The Book of Proceedings provides vital information and evidence on how nuclear and nuclear related techniques can contribute to the development of sustainable livestock production systems, as well as noting the constraints and opportunities for their use in developing countries. The book hopes to serve as guidance for scientists as well as government and institutional policy and decision makers.

    Parallel sessions: People, policies, institutions and communities. Chapter Five of the Proceedings of the FAO International Symposium on the Role of Agricultural Biotechnologies in Sustainable Food Systems and Nutrition 2016

    Chapter 5 contains the Report of outcomes from the three parallel sessions dedicated to the theme of people, policies, institutions and communities. The session looked at the impact of biotechnologies on agricultural productivity, environmental sustainability and socio-economic well-being. It also considered the role of evidence in policy-making. Nineteen case studies were discussed in consideration of applying non-GMO biotechnologies for smallholders, which could eventually assist policy-make rs when deciding on potential interventions involving biotechnologies for smallholders in developing countries. Specific case studies and experiences from China and India were also discussed, with reference to both GMOs and non-GMO biotechnologies. The FAO international symposium on “The role of agricultural biotechnologies in sustainable food systems and nutrition” took place from 15 to 17 February 2016 at FAO headquarters, Rome. Over 400 people attended, including 230 delegates from 75 me mber countries and the European Union, as well as representatives of intergovernmental organizations, private sector entities, civil society organizations, academia/research organizations and producer organizations/cooperatives. The symposium encompassed the crop, livestock, forestry and fishery sectors and was organized around three main themes: i) climate change; ii) sustainable food systems and nutrition; and iii) people, policies, institutions and communities. The proceedings provide the mai n highlights of the symposium which covered a broad range of biotechnologies, from low-tech approaches such as those involving use of microbial fermentation processes, biofertilizers, biopesticides and artificial insemination, to high-tech approaches such as those involving advanced DNA-based methodologies and genetically modified organisms.
