    The Russian Federation and Ukraine are major global suppliers of cereals and sunflower oil, while the Russian Federation is also a leading exporter of fertilizers and energy. Due to the devastating war in Ukraine, global prices for these commodities have reached record highs. FAO Markets and Trade Division, with the FAO Investment Centre and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, have published this study on the potential impact of the war in Ukraine on food security and agrifood trade in Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco and Tunisia. Beyond a detailed analysis of how the war in Ukraine affects these countries, the report also contains a set of key policy recommendations to help governments cope with the unfolding situation and improve food security in the medium and long term. This publication is part of the Knowledge for Investment (K4I) series managed by FAO Investment Centre.

    Morocco - Investing in collective action: opportunities in agrifood cooperatives 2018

    This study aims to provide a better understanding of how cooperatives can contribute to the development of the agriculture sector and rural areas in Morocco and what policy changes and areas of investment could be considered to better enable this. It is dedicated to policy decision-makers, development partners and potential institutional investors in the agriculture sector in Morocco. The study seeks to provide answers to the following key research questions: (i) What are the distinctive features of cooperatives in Morocco? (ii) What role can cooperatives potentially play in the development of the agriculture sector and rural areas? (iii) How have current policies supported cooperatives in playing that role? and (iv) What are the opportunities to provide a more enabling environment for cooperative development? These questions are used as background to assess the policy and institutional environment in which cooperatives operate, to explain some of the current characteristics of cooperatives in Morocco, and finally to identify key opportunities and issues which should be addressed by policy decision-makers, development partners and investors, in order to benefit the agriculture sector as a whole.

    Transformation to low carbon agrifood value chains in Egypt

    This study presents opportunities for transformation to low carbon agrifood value chains through scaling up successful climate-smart agriculture (CSA) practices. The study draws upon data from 173 Farmer Field Schools (FFS) conducted by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) as part of the IFAD-funded ‘Sustainable Agriculture Investments and Livelihoods’ (SAIL) Project, implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation (MoALR) in Egypt.The study assesses the potential for increasing farmers’ incomes, decreasing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and improving water-use efficiency (WUE) following the implementation of CSA interventions. It also analyses sustainable value chain production models for selected crops, with the goal of establishing climate-smart value chains that are economically feasible and present financial investment opportunities for small investors.
