    FAO’s Technical Cooperation Programme (TCP) is one of the mechanisms to respond to countries’ most pressing needs for technical assistance and effectively pursue the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The 2019 Report of the Technical Cooperation Programme introduces a new series of annual reports that provide FAO Members, governments, donors, beneficiaries and other stakeholders with evidence of the impact of the work carried out by FAO through the TCP. Prepared by the Outreach, Marketing and Reporting Unit (PSRR), in close collaboration with the TCP Coordination Unit in the Office of the Assistant Director-General (ADG-PS), the first in the series presents and assesses the achievements and catalytic role of TCP-funded projects. Based on a review of the TCP projects operationally closed during 2018 and interviews with lead technical officers, technical officers at FAO headquarters, budget holders and FAO country representatives, the report provides details on the characteristics, typical interventions and results of the programme, and features a select number of in-depth stories to highlight the tangible and lasting results of the programme’s catalytic work.

    Climate change threatens our ability to ensure global food security, eradicate poverty and achieve sustainable development. About 736 million people live in extreme poverty, and the global response to climate change today will determine how we feed future generations. By 2030, UN member countries have committed to eradicating extreme poverty and hunger for people everywhere. As ending poverty and hunger are at the heart of FAO’s work, the organization is helping countries develop and implement evidence-based pro-poor policies, strategies and programmes that promote inclusive growth and sustainable livelihoods, as well as to increase the resilience, adaptive and coping capacity of poor and vulnerable communities to climate change. In order to achieve this, FAO encourages an integrated Climate-Poverty Approach to support policy development and action by policymakers, government officials, local-level institutions, communities, researchers, and development and humanitarian agencies worldwide. The Approach has been developed with insights from many perspectives, and includes not only climate and poverty aspects, but also indigenous, gender, food security, disaster response, resilience, SIDS and coastal community perspectives, among others. With a series of policy recommendations and tools to improve the design, delivery, and results of synergies and linkages between climate mitigation and adaptation, poverty reduction and food security actions, these synergies and linkages can make significant contributions towards achieving both the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Paris Agreement targets.

    The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) works with 14 Caribbean Community (CARICOM) countries to enhance food and nutritional security (FNS), eradicate hunger and malnutrition, improve livelihoods and support rural development. This brochure includes a testament to the FAO’s commitment to supporting a Caribbean that is free from hunger and malnutrition, where food and agriculture contribute to improving the living standards of all, especially the poorest, in an economically, socially and environmentally sustainable manner.
