    The flyer provides at a glance information regarding the proper framework for implementing the 2030 Agenda for water efficiency and productivity (SDG 6.4) through three major work packages: (i) establishing a robust water accounting system providing the evidence base for the full water budgeting (supply, demand, uses and re-cycling, present and projected) and for monitoring progress in the achievement of the targets while assessing the institutional effectiveness to govern water resources; and (ii) implementing a series of interventions to increase water efficiency and productivity in selected farming systems of Iran to advance in achieving the SDG 6.4 so that the country can benefit from theses obejectives which are also the goals of a project being impelmented by FAO.

    Water accounting (WA) is the systematic study of the current status and trends in water supply, demand, accessibility and use in domains that have been specified (FAO 2012). It is one of the tools to to quantify the 'benefits' and the 'costs' of alternative policy options to address food insecurity while sustaining water resources. This flyer provides information about water accounting concept and methodology to increase the knowledge of technical experts from the Ministry of Irrigation and Ministry of Agriculture when working in the field. This publication comes under the activities of the regional project on “Implementing the 2030 Agenda for water efficiency/productivity and water sustainability in NENA countries”. However, this publication is specifically targeting technical experts working in Egypt.

    This report provides the water accounting study for Awash River basin in Ethiopia carried out by IHE-Delft using the Water Productivity (WaPOR) data portal of the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO). The Awash River Basin is the most utilized river basin in Ethiopia hosting most of the industrial activities in the country, a number of small to large scale irrigation schemes and the main population centres of the country with more than 18.6 million people (2017 estimate). The basin faces high water stress during the peak of the irrigation season and frequent flooding in rainy seasons. The Water Accounting Plus (WA+) system designed by IHE Delft with its partners FAO and IWMI has been applied to gain full insights into the state of the water resources in the basin for the period 2009 to 2018. The WA+ framework is a reporting mechanism for water flows, fluxes and stocks that are summarized by means of WA+ sheets. The role of land use and land cover on producing and consuming water is described explicitly.
