Synopsis (short abstract) Humankind is facing a perfect storm of climate change, biodiversity loss, and multiple forms of malnutrition (stunting, wasting, micronutrient deficiencies, and obesity) coexisting in the same country, community, household, and even individual. Challenges from each of these areas are well known and recognized, but what seems to be missing in many development and policy circles is a recognition that food is at the centre of all three of these issues. This paper identifies entry points within agri-food systems to improve biodiversity and diets, two levers that can be used to enhance nutrition and optimize environmental sustainability while ensuring social equity, especially of the most vulnerable people. It also presents recommendations for concrete actions by key stakeholders – governments, academia, civil society, private sector, and development partners –to build resilient, inclusive, and sustainable agri-food systems.

Latin America and the Caribbean have seen a decline in hunger and food insecurity for two years, driven by social protection programs and post-COVID recovery. However, disparities persist, especially among women, rural populations, and vulnerable groups. The region is unlikely to meet most nutrition targets, and healthy diets remain expensive. Climate variability is increasing in the region, affecting food security across availability, access, utilization, and stability. This climate impact reduces agricultural productivity, disrupts food supply chains, and raises food prices. Vulnerable populations are most affected, with changing diets further exacerbating the situation. Climate change is worsening food security and the causes of malnutrition.

In the framework of the project GCP/GLO/1266/FRA-F, in collaboration with the Government of France, FAO organized a climate–nutrition roundtable entitled “Policy and Research Roundtable Dialogue on Integrated Climate–Nutrition Action” on 5 February 2025. The event brought together approximately 1 300 participants, both in person and online, and featured distinguished speakers, including Permanent Representatives, government officials, leading researchers, and senior officials from UN agencies and civil society organizations. Over the course of three hours, a joint keynote presentation shared the latest data, metrics, and evidence on the impact of integrated climate-nutrition action followed by rich discussions exploring key policy options and opportunities and research themes.This brochure presents the key take-home messages from the keynote presentations and panel discussions, complemented by selected quotes from event speakers. The key take-home messages highlight the evidence base on climate change and nutrition linkages, the impact of integrated climate–nutrition actions, positive experiences and promising practices, as well as evidence gaps identified by speakers, providing a concise and impactful summary of the roundtable’s key insights to advance integrated actions across the climate, agrifood, and nutrition sectors.
