Synopsis (short abstract) The booklet presents the key findings of the global capacity needs assessment conducted by the Task Force on Best Practices of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration. The assessment was undertaken to provide a baseline of existing capacities across people, organizations, networks, partnerships and the enabling environment; help identify strengths, gaps, needs and barriers to achieving and sustaining global restoration goals; and guide the Decade’s system-wide capacity development efforts by mainstreaming restoration capabilities into regional and national knowledge and learning action plans.

The agricultural sector is able to provide food of sufficient quantity and quality to feed and nourish the world’s population. However, capacity-development efforts need to be strengthened among agricultural extension and advisory services through a systematic approach based on a better understanding of needs, challenges and interactions at and among all institutional levels, from front-line workers to policymakers. The Global Capacity Needs Assessment (GCNA) methodology examines the capacity gaps at the individual, organizational and enabling-environment levels and aims at:
exploring all the opportunities and challenges to integrate nutrition-related objectives into agricultural programmes and policies;

identifying capacity needs of the EAS providers and at the organizational and policy/enabling environment levels for strengthening capacities to integrate nutrition outcomes in their regular tasks and responsibilities; and

identifying knowledge gaps in training materials on nutrition-sensitive agriculture.

The capacity needs assessment tool is meant to be used by national and local groups as a foundation for the design of school-based food and nutrition education capacity development strategies. The tool builds on FAO’s experience and expertise in capacity development, and adopts a broad approach that not only assesses capacities at the individual level, but also expands to the level of organizations and the enabling environment.

Assessment of forest data availability and related technical capacity needs in West Africa 2023

This forest data assessment was conducted as part of the five-year Global Transformation of Forests for People and Climate: a focus on West Africa project, funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida). This document aims to provide quality data to support decision-making and sustainable management of forest and land resources at both national and subregional levels. It also seeks to develop processes that could be replicated in other subregions within Africa and outside the region. This document is one of the outputs of the project and provides information on existing forest data in the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) countries, critical information gaps on forest condition and land use and land cover dynamics, and capacity development needs.
