Synopsis (short abstract) Food loss and waste (FLW) is costly for people, the environment and economies, particularly during a time of global uncertainty. In 2019, an FAO study found that around 14 percent of the food produced globally was lost during the post-harvest production stage before reaching the retail stage. This Investment Brief summarizes the challenge of FLW. It focuses on identifying action areas for development banks to meet this challenge. Potential action areas include assistance during the COVID-19 pandemic, and data collection and analytics, as well as direct country-level interventions, with a food systems approach. The brief explores options to attract private sector investment, including through a dedicated blended finance facility and institutional solutions within development banks, to create broad-based support for FLW reduction. This publication is part of the Investment Brief series under the FAO Investment Centre's Knowledge for Investment (K4I) programme.

    The countries of the region are building a future with less Food Losses and Waste. The Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), the main political forum of the region, has included Food Loss and Waste Reduction as one component of its Action Plan for Food and Nutrition Security and the Eradication of Hunger 2025. There are countries with experience in Food Loss and Waste Reduction that are making good use of sub-products. Steps are underway to build the institutional framewor k for the formation of a Regional Alliance for Food Loss and Waste Reduction. There is concrete evidence of food losses and waste in specific value chains in a few countries, and there are also potential solutions.

    Voluntary code of conduct for food loss and waste reduction 2022

    At its 26th Session in October 2018, the FAO Committee on Agriculture (COAG) requested FAO to take the lead to develop voluntary codes of conduct for the reduction of food loss and food waste. In response to the COAG request, FAO developed the Voluntary Code of Conduct for Food Loss and Waste Reduction, which was endorsed by the 42nd Session of the FAO Conference in June 2021. The Voluntary Code of Conduct for Food Loss and Waste Reduction sets out a generic framework of actions and guiding principles that should be followed to reduce food loss and waste (FLW) and support the transformation of agrifood systems to be more efficient, more inclusive, more resilient and more sustainable. Governments can use the framework as a basis for the development of strategies, policies and legislations, which are critical elements of intervention packages aimed at effectively and sustainably reducing FLW. The framework can also serve for the formulation of programmes on FLW reduction and for the preparation of technical guidelines for use by practitioners.
