Synopsis (short abstract) This policy brief identifies actions countries in the East Africa region can take to reduce methane emissions from the livestock sector by including livestock-specific interventions in their nationally determined contributions as part of the Paris Agreement's commitment. The publication identifies four challenges and recommendations based on the following three pillars: transparency, coherence, and implementation capacity. The recommendations included in this brief are based on the regional dialogues with East African countries and address both ministries and livestock stakeholders with the aim of helping them set ambitious national methane reduction targets in the livestock sector.

This brief outlines the objectives of the “FAO Actions for Reduction of Methane” programme, or FARM programme, which aims to step up efforts to reduce methane (CH4) emissions from agrifood systems. Although agrifood systems are highly vulnerable to climate change, they are also an important part of the solution for climate change adaptation and mitigation while building resilience and strengthening food security. Agrifood systems offer tangible and accessible solutions to reduce CH4 emissions from a range of sources including enteric fermentation, manure management, flooded rice cultivation and the burning of crop residues.
