    In this study, we present a strategy of restoring genetic diversity for conservation of Abies koreana, an endemic species vulnerable to climate change, and especially a species recovery strategy for small populations with high threat of extinction. Species recovery strategy is a restoration method that maintains population vitality and resilience by utilizing genetically appropriate materials to adapt well to future environmental conditions. Korean fir (Abies koreana E.H.Wilson), which is a Korean endemic species that has been designated as an endangered species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. There are three large and six small populations with a relatively large and small number of individuals, respectively. According to the genetic analysis of the large-scale population of A. koreana, the genetic diversity of each group is relatively high and remains stable to date. According to the spatial genetic structure analysis for selecting the restoration materials to avoid inbreeding depression, it is appropriate to select Mt. Jirisan population at intervals of about 30 meters between individuals and Mt. Hallasan group of about 15 meters. A total of six small populations of A. koreana in Korea, have a distribution area of less than 1ha. Small population with a restrict distribution has high risk of extinction due to low number of individuals, low genetic diversity and low seedlings in the population, so it is necessary to restocking method. Selecting the restoration materials for the small population needs to consider the genetic diversity and uniqueness of the natural population while enhancing their adaptability and resilience against environmental change. In order to restore genetic diversity of small populations to maintain the resilience, an approach is needed to evaluate the genetic similarity between the populations in Korea and to introduce appropriate restoration materials considering genetic diversity.     The Korea Forest Conservation Association (KFCA) is a special corporation under the Korea Forest Service, pursuant to Article 46 of Mountainous Districts Management Act. This study analyzes the current functions and state of operations in KFCA for areas with high social value. The main role of KFCA is to act as an expert in investigating the adequacy and validity of the use of forest land that is 30ha or larger; to research for policies that can help upgrade the system for mountainous regions and improve the evaluation of mountainous characteristics. This review provides a broad overview of the major roles and current work status of a forest-specialized organization in Korea, operated as a special corporation under the Korea Forest Service.     The change in forest productivity and stand-dynamics under climate change in East Asian temperate forests: A case study from South Korean forests

    The velocity and impact of climate change on forest appear to be site, environment, and tree species-specific.The primary objective of this research is to assess the changes in productivity of major temperate tree species in South Korea using terrestrial inventory and satellite remote sensing data. The area covered by each tree species was further categorized into either lowland forest (LLF) or high mountain forest (HMF) and investigated. We used the repeated Korean national forest inventory (NFI) data to calculate a stand-level annual increment (SAI). We then compared the SAI, a ground-based productivity measure, to MODIS net primary productivity (NPP) as a measure of productivity based on satellite imagery. In addition, the growth index of each increment core, which eliminated the effect of tree age on radial growth, was derived as an indicator of the variation of productivity by tree species over the past four decades. Based on these steps, we understand the species- and elevation-dependent dynamics. The secondary objective is to predict the forest dynamics under climate change using the Perfect Plasticity Approximation with Simple Biogeochemistry (PPA- SiBGC) model. The PPA-SiBGC is an analytically tractable model of forest dynamics, defined in terms of parameters for individual trees, including allometry, growth, and mortality. We estimated these parameters for the major species by using NFI and increment core data. We predicted forest dynamics using the following time-series metrics: Net ecosystem exchange, aboveground biomass, belowground biomass, C, soil respiration, and relative abundance. We then focus on comparing the impact of climate change on LLF and HMF. The results of our study can be used to develop climate-smart forest management strategies to ensure that both LLF and HMF continue to be resilient and continue to provide a wide range of ecosystem services in the Eastern Asian region.
