Synopsis (short abstract) The Special Fund for Emergency and Rehabilitation Activities (SFERA), established in 2004, enhances the capacity of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to respond rapidly to food security and agricultural emergencies. Through strategic resource partner funding, SFERA provides FAO with the financial means and flexibility to react promptly to humanitarian crises, reducing the time between funding decisions and action on the ground.

    The Government of the Kingdom of Belgium contributes flexible funding to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) through the Special Fund for Emergency and Rehabilitation Activities (SFERA) to address the most urgent needs of vulnerable populations in 2023 and 2024. Thanks to Belgium’s contribution of USD 10.9 million, FAO aims to support priority countries to quickly improve the food security of crisis-affected households.

    Through the Special Fund for Emergency and Rehabilitation Activities, the Government of the Kingdom of Belgium is supporting FAO's efforts to ensure the timely provision of fertilizers to meet the input needs of farmers in Tigray, Ethiopia. Belgium’s generous support will help cover transportation-related costs for delivering fertilizers to assist 37 926 households (189 639 people). This document provides a brief description of the current context of the intervention and highlights the importance of the contribution in enhancing the food security and resilience of crisis-affected populations.

    Through the Special Fund for Emergency and Rehabilitation Activities (SFERA), the Government of the Kingdom of Belgium contributed USD 500 000 to FAO to mitigate the adverse impacts of two waves of devastating flash floods (May–June 2022) on the livelihoods and food security of vulnerable farming and fishing households. With Belgium’s generous support, FAO will provide 11 200 flood-affected farming and fishing households (56 000 people) with time-critical production inputs. The planned emergency assistance packages will enable the affected communities to restore their livelihoods, and increase crop and aquaculture production. The Central Emergency Response Fund will complement this project by funding interventions to support the livestock sector. This document provides a brief description of the current context of the intervention and highlights the importance of the contribution in enhancing the resilience of flood-affected communities.
