Agriculture is an increasingly vital lifeline for people in Haiti. Rising insecurity and low harvests have pushed food prices up. The violence is disrupting markets, supply chains, local food availability and access, and the safe movement of people and goods. Over 75 percent of Haiti’s most food-insecure people are in rural areas. They need urgent supplies to continue producing food for their families and community. Boosting vulnerable farming families’ agricultural and livestock production increases their self-reliance and strengthens their resilience against future shocks.

Mali faces a severe humanitarian crisis driven by years of armed conflict, climatic hazards and high staple food prices. Acute food insecurity is expected to increase by 30 percent during the lean season (June–August) and include 1 671 people in Catastrophe (Cadre Harmonisé Phase 5). Nine out of ten Malians affected by hunger are in rural areas, where people need urgent assistance to protect and revive food production. For example, vegetable production support provides families nutritious food and income, with every USD 1 invested yielding four times its value in harvests.

Cameroon, as most countries in the Sahel, is currently facing shocks that are affecting people’s food security and livelihoods. The upsurge in attacks by non‑state armed groups in the Far North region on the border with Nigeria, the sociopolitical crisis in the North-West and South-West regions and the influx of Central African refugees in the East and Adamawa regions are the main factors exacerbating people’s vulnerabilities. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) together with the Kingdom of Belgium contribute to the Government of Cameroon’s Emergency Plan to Combat Food Crisis in the country through agriculture and livestock support in the eastern region.
