Synopsis (short abstract) Military escalation in 2020 across the Nagorno Karabakh ( borders led to the displacement of around 90 000 people from the Nagorno Karabakh conflict zone A multisector needs assessment conducted in 2020 revealed that 68 percent of the arrivals from NK borders were in need of food assistance 61 000 Approximately 80 percent were accommodated and supported by the families hosting them, with these arrangements stretching the household resources of the hosting families and impacting their purchasing power According to a December 2020 REACH multisector needs assessment, 31 percent of hosting households reported themselves as in need of food assistance, a much higher rate than the average rates of food insecurity across Armenia prior to the conflict 16 percent) Displaced households also needed support in establishing themselves and reinstating their food security, livelihoods and self reliance.

    Agriculture plays an essential role in Armenia’s economy, contributing significantly to gross domestic product (GDP) and meeting consumer demand in local markets. Armenian agricultural products and processed goods possess substantial export potential, providing both food for the population and raw materials for various industries. In 2023, agriculture was the third largest sector of the Armenian economy, comprising about 8.4 percent of GDP (down from 10.4 percent in 2022), following trade (12.6 percent) and the manufacturing industry (11 percent). The sector is especially crucial in rural areas, providing primary livelihoods and economic activities. Employment in agriculture accounted for 21.65 percent of the total workforce in Armenia. Food insecurity in Armenia is driven by financial hardship, the economic impacts of the COVID 19 pandemic, the consequences of the conflict concerning Nagorno-Karabakh and the war in Ukraine; taken together, these factors put additional strain on marginally food-secure households. The war in Ukraine has disrupted traditional logistics routes to and from Armenia, impeding the country’s export and import potential. The agriculture sector has been particularly impacted by the disruption of fuel, seed, pesticide and fertilizer supplies, which has caused significant increases in the price of these inputs. In this context, the government requested FAO emergency support to assist with the import of high-quality wheat seeds to mitigate the risk of shortages in wheat supplies.

    Between 2015 and 2016 South Africa faced some of the worst droughts to have hit the country in decades These droughts were induced by El Niño, a climate pattern that results in the warming of surface waters in the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean, in turn causing a decrease in water availability in the form of rain and discharge into rivers An estimated 6 291 900 people across South Africa are estimated to have been affected by this drought More specifically, smallholder farmers, who are dependent upon agriculture for their livelihoods, and individuals with lower socio economic status were most vulnerable to the adverse effects of the droughts Furthermore, the production of maize and livestock was significantly impacted, with the decrease in production resulting in rising food costs.

    The crisis in Ukraine reached alarming proportions. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) estimated a staggering 4.5 million people requiring urgent agricultural livelihoods support and food assistance, which represents a 2 000 percent increase since the onset of the crisis in February 2022. As the conflict continued to escalate, a humanitarian crisis especially in East Ukraine became dire. To address this, a project was designed to target the most vulnerable populations affected by the conflict, particularly those residing in rural areas of Donetsk and Luhansk oblast. These regions saw a significant deterioration in living conditions due to the ongoing conflict, resulting in higher unemployment rates and limited access to livelihood opportunities. Many households within 0 to 10 kilometers of the contact line were left grappling with food insecurity, resorting to backyard agriculture and livestock production to meet their basic nutritional needs.
