Diaspora contribute to the development of their countries of origin through remittances and investments, but also by transferring knowledge, technologies and skills. Boosting the contribution of diaspora to agribusiness is one of the priorities of FAO’s work on rural migration. It aims to help migrants and diaspora contribute resources and skills to rural areas and support agro entrepreneurs through mentorship, coaching and investments. The leaflet is part of a brochure that presents FAO’s work on rural migration and each priority for action. The leaflet includes a description of what FAO does, with whom and why, presenting tangible results and stories from the field.

Long-term job frustration underlines Africa’s most pressing issues such as distress migration and peace and security, making it the number one policy preoccupation for policy makers in the continent. With limited resources and unlimited problems, policy makers are forced to prioritize interventions that will achieve the biggest impact on tackling youth unemployment. In this regard, agripreneurship can turn job seekers into job creators and help young agripreneurs not to fall back into unemployment again. However, not all business training programmes are effective and not all trainees benefit. Evidence has been mixed concerning the impact of traditional business training in enabling youth to develop viable businesses, including in the agriculture sector. This policy brief presents evidence on the impact of Personal Initiative Agripreneurship training titled “Agripreneurship 101” on achieving success for youth-led agribusinesses.

Matching grant programmes: An effective approach to channel remittances into sustainable investment in agribusiness?
FSN Forum report of activity, No. 177
    2023
This document summarizes the online consultation “Matching grant programmes: An effective approach to channel remittances into sustainable investment in agribusiness?” held on the FAO Global Forum on Food Security and Nutrition (FSN Forum) from 18 February to 15 May 2022. This consultation was organized in the context of FAO’s work on supporting countries in developing evidence-based policies and programmes to support migrants and returnees, and their families, in investing remittances in agribusiness – one example being the pilot project “Promoting Inclusive Economic Growth through Matching Grants”, conducted by ESA in Tajikistan. The consultation’s aim was to help further refine the design of such policies and programmes by gathering input from a wide range of stakeholders on the potential of matching grant programmes (MGPs) to stimulate the investment of remittances in the agricultural sector.
