Synopsis (short abstract) After nearly two years of unrelenting conflict, the Sudan remains the world’s largest internal displacement crisis. Humanitarian needs continue to escalate at a staggering rate, with one in two people acutely food insecure. Famine has been declared in North Darfur and the Western Nuba mountains, as conflict, economic collapse and climate shocks push entire communities to the brink of catastrophe. Emergency agricultural assistance to boost local food production and availability is an urgent humanitarian priority, critical to preventing further hunger and suffering.

Climate shocks, conflict and insecurity, economic downturn and the spillover effects of the conflict in the Sudan are the key drivers of this crisis.Emergency agricultural assistance is vital to enable people to immediately access nutritious food while strengthening their livelihoods in the medium to long term. With a livelihood kit, a farming household can produce enough food to last nearly half a year, over and above their other sources of food.

    With conflict raging since April 2023, the Sudan has rapidly become the world’s largest internal displacement crisis. Humanitarian needs are immense and rising. One in two people require immediate assistance, and more than one in three are acutely food insecure. Intense conflict and continued economic decline have constrained agricultural production, limiting access to food nationwide. Restoring crop and livestock production – a livelihood for 2/3 of the population – is a top humanitarian priority. This document provides an overview of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations' (FAO) component of the 2024 Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan for the Sudan. FAO requires USD 104.1 million to assist 9 million people.

    This document consists of comprehensive guidance for producing FAO publications throughout all stages of the process, from conceptualization to dissemination and beyond. It is divided into sections focusing on matters regarding the workflow, visual identity, content and structure of FAO publications. In addition to FAOSTYLE in six languages, this guidance also includes: "Publishing policy", providing high-level guidance aimed at those involved in the creation or approval of a publishing plan; "Authorship and plagiarism guidelines", outlining the principles and criteria for authorship of FAO publications; "Graphic design guidelines", focusing on the practical application of FAO's visual identity and design standards; “Responsible use of AI in publishing”, covering how to use AI responsibly and ethically when producing a publication; “Open Access policy”, a summary of the policy that encourages the wide use, reproduction and dissemination of the intellectual property that FAO produces; and "Digital publishing", guidance on how to create a digital (HTML) publication. Publishing at FAO is a living document and will continue to evolve as publishing practices evolve. A new section on managing a publishing project is forthcoming. Last updated June 2025.
