Synopsis (short abstract) The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture (MEWA) of Saudi Arabia have signed the FAO–Saudi Technical Cooperation Programme (2019–2025) under which FAO’s technical and advisory support to the MEWA is facilitated, coordinated and managed. Within the framework of the technical cooperation programme, the programme, “Strengthening MEWA’s capacity to implement the Sustainable Rural Agricultural Development,” has been approved. Under this programme, FAO will provide technical and advisory assistance to the MEWA in implementing its flagship programme, which was approved within the context of the National Transformation Programme of the Saudi Vision 2030.This guide was prepared under the framework of the Sustainable Rural Agricultural Development Programme. The guide provides clear technical and management guidelines for nursery operation and management to guide technicians of the National Center for Vegetation Cover Development and Combating Desertification and all other relevant entities in the country in the production of high quality tree and shrub seedlings. The guide provides easy-to-follow instructions that can be understood by non-specialized individuals on the establishment and management of nurseries for the production of native tree and shrub species. Good management of nurseries is fundamental to producing good quality seedlings, and good quality seedlings are the foundation of any planting programme. The use of native species is emphasized due to their better adaptation to local climate conditions and terrain, thus providing better resilience to climate change and reducing the risks related to invasive species, pests and disease outbreaks. The guide covers various aspects of nursery management, including site selection, nursery layout, growing media, container filling, seed sowing, irrigation, tending of seedlings and pest management.

    The booklet contains an overview of the FAO Technical Cooperation Programme with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The longstanding and strategic partnership between FAO and Saudi Arabia since 1948 and focuses on agriculture, food security, and sustainable development. The current cycle of the Technical Cooperation Programme aims to strengthen the capacities of Saudi Arabia's food and agriculture sector to contribute to the Saudi Vision 2030. The ongoing projects under the Programme are "Strengthening the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture (MEWA) capacity to implement its Sustainable Rural Agriculture Development Programme", "Promoting efficient irrigation and water productivity amongst farmers" and "Enhancing National Capacities for Irrigation Management" include initiatives on sustainable agriculture, efficient irrigation, beekeeping particularly on productions of coffee Arabica, beekeeping and honey, rose, sub-tropical fruits, rain-fed cereals, strengthening capacity of small-scale fishermen, fish farmers and livestock herders, and sustainable management of rangelands, forests and natural resources to support rural livelihoods. The Programme also supports in enhancing value addition from smallholdings and rural activities and the development of agri-marketing strategies, extension and advisory services, and the strengthening of rural institutions and agriculture cooperatives in Saudi Arabia.

    The Saudi Arabia Forestry Sector Review (FSR) has been prepared as part of the strategic initiative to rehabilitate and restore degraded forest land in Saudi Arabia. This aligns with the National Environment Strategy, the National Forestry Strategy, the Greening the Kingdom Programme, and the Project on Strengthening MEWA’s Capacity to Implement its Sustainable Rural Agricultural Development (SRAD) Programme (2019–2025), which has been jointly formulated by FAO and Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture. The FSR aims to provide an updated status of the forest sector, inform the government about gaps in policies and planning, and identify prioritized strategic actions needed to develop the sector in accordance with Saudi Vision 2030. This review focuses on the current state of forests, the services and commodities they provide, and their future impact on land degradation, desertification control, and sustainable development in the Kingdom, particularly in rural areas. The main objective of the FSR is to deliver a detailed analysis of the forest sector in Saudi Arabia, benchmark it against the forest sectors of countries with similar environments and recommend interventions to position the sector as a key contributor to Saudi Vision 2030 and other national and international development goals.
