Establishing a multi-purpose national forest monitoring system to improve land use monitoring capacities in Ghana
Strengthening the accessibility and accuracy of forest-related data for meeting national and international climate targets
    2021
    Also available in:

Since 2008, the Republic of Ghana has implemented activities for reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD+). These actions include establishing a multi-purpose national forest monitoring system (NFMS) to improve land use monitoring capacities in the country. Development of Ghana's NFMS strengthens the accessibility and accuracy of forest-related data for meeting national and international climate targets. This case study may serve as an example to other countries implementing NFMS, as it describes the purpose of an NFMS, the design, related stakeholders and other actors, as well as the challenges and successes experienced in Ghana.

    Forest assessment and monitoring 2002

The Global Forest Resources Assessment 2000 (FRA 2000) is now completed, but work has already begun on the next global assessment. The expert consultation "Global Forest Resources Assessments - Linking National and International Efforts", known as Kotka IV, brought together international experts in July 2002 to address future concepts and strategies. The articles in this issue of Unasylva are adapted for a wider audience from papers prepared for the meeting. Without going into technical detail, they explore links among assessment and monitoring, national and international information needs, criteria and indicators for sustainable forest management, and reporting of forest-related information to international instruments. The technical details can be found on the FAO Web site (www.fao.org/forestry) and will be published in the Kotka IV proceedings.

Jordan: Water along the food chain
An analytical brief of selected food chains from a water perspective

Jordan is capable of moving away from all unsustainable, agricultural and food activities that are high water consumers and water inefficient. This will be possible if investments target profitable food chains that have made clear efforts to improve their water efficiency level and have the potential to further enhance the productivity of each drop of water consumed. In this regard, the poultry meat sector for domestic consumption and some selected high-value market fruits and vegetables of the Jordan Valley (JV) deserve priority attention.

Water desalination for agricultural applications 2006

With worldwide concerns about water scarcity, agriculture is under pressure to improve water management and explore available options to match supply and demand. Desalination is a technical option to increase the availability of freshwater both in coastal areas with limited resources and in areas where brackish waters are available. Water desalination is the main source of potable water in some countries and in many islands around the world and it is also being used in certain coun tries to irrigate high-value crops. However, it has proven much less economic for agricultural application than the reuse of treated wastewater, even where the capital costs of the desalination plants are subsidized.
