No results found.Peru is among the world’s ten mega-diverse countries, Indonesia’s rainforests shelter almost 20 percent of the world’s plant, mammal and bird species, while Uganda forests are home to about 7.5 percent of mammal and 10.2 percent of global bird species, and support the world’s highest number of primate species. Unclear tenure and conflicts are the major factors in deforestation of forest areas targeted by the project implemented by FAO, aimed at securing tenure rights for forest landscape-dependent communities: linking science with policy to advance tenure security, sustainable forest Management and people’s livelihoods. Which results achieved the project, and what are the lessons that can be replicated? To what extent were government institutions and indigenous communities empowered by the project to develop and implement policies and projects that support tenure security, livelihoods and sustainable forest management? These are just some of the questions answered in this evaluation. -

Marked by more than forty years of conflict, the province of Ituri, in the northeast of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, has experienced massive population displacement and recurrent violence. The basic needs of the population, notably access to food and agriculture, have been seriously impacted, harming the quality of life and worsening food insecurity. The goal of the Data in Emergencies team at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations was to assess the impact of decades of violence on agriculture, food security and livelihoods in Ituri, and to propose recommendations for programming. -

Governments would do well to consider these contributions in their pursuit of food security goals, by integrating forestry with other disciplines, for example agriculture and nutrition, in policy and planning.

No results found.This document contains the report of the Symposium on Impacts of Fishing on the Environment arranged by the ICES-FAO Working Group on Fishing Technology and Fish Behaviour (WGFTFB) held in Bangkok, Thailand, from 6 to 10 May 2013. The Symposium was attended by more than 130 fisheries experts from 25 countries, and it provided an opportunity for fishing technologists and others from ICES member countries to exchange knowledge and ideas with contemporaries from around the world, especially Asia. T he symposium comprised three one-day sessions: (i) low-impact and fuel-efficient fishing gear (LIFE); (ii) use of artificial light as a stimulus on fish behaviour in fish capture (LIGHT); and (iii) selectivity of trawls in multispecies/crustacean fisheries (SHRIMP). This report summarizes the presentations of the Symposium and concludes the main discussions. This report also summarizes presentations from the open session of the annual WGFTFB meeting. -

No results found.One-third of all food produced in the world is lost or wasted from farm to fork, according to estimates calculated by FAO (2011). This wastage not only has an enormous negative impact on the global economy and food availability, it also has major environmental impacts. The direct economic cost of food wastage of agricultural products (excluding fish and seafood), based on producer prices only, is about 750 billion USD, equivalent to the GDP of Switzerland. The aim of the Toolkit is to showcase concrete examples of good practices for food loss and waste reduction, while pointing to information sources, guidelines and pledges favoring food wastage reduction. The inspirational examples featured throughout this Toolkit demonstrate that everyone, from individual households and producers, through governments, to large food industries, can make choices that will ultimately lead to sustainable consumption and production patterns, and thus, a better world for all. -
