Near East and North Africa Forests and Climate Change: Climate Induced Forest Disturbances, Building Resilience and Boosting Implementation of Countries Nationally Determined Contributions (N)DCs FO:NEFRC/2021/3
25th Session for the Near East Forestry and Range Commission

The Near East and North Africa (NENA) region is dry, hot and scarce in water and arable land resources, with arid, semi-arid to desert conditions and limited tree cover. Yet the 74.7 million hectares of forest and other wooded land, together with rangelands, produce a range of goods and ecosystem services that are essential to rural livelihoods. The region is extremely vulnerable to climate change through heat and drought, and national adaptation priorities focus on crops, forests and water resources. This document describes key challenges related to forests and climate change in the region, and how FAO is working with Members to address them. These include: • Forest and wildland fires, and FAO support for the NENA Regional Forest Wildland Fire Network (NENFIRE) • Forest pests and diseases, and support for the Near East Network on Forest Health and Invasive Species (NENFHIS) • Capacity needs for tracking climate change mitigation and adaptation progress, and support through the FAO/GEF project “Building global capacity to increase transparency in the forest sector” Tackling these interlinked challenges related to climate change is a prerequisite for strengthening the resilience of the forest ecosystems and the communities that depend on them.

Enhancing Countries’ Nationally Determined Contributions for Emissions Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation - MTF/GLO/168/WRI 2022

Under the Paris Agreement on climate change, all parties are required to define and communicate their “nationally determined contributions” (NDCs), the efforts that they plan to undertake to reduce national greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to the impacts of climate change. To ensure they are sufficiently ambitious, the targets and commitments set out by countries in 2015 need updating every five years. This project represented FAO’s response to specific countries’ requests for support to conduct the first revision of NDCs in 2020. The overarching objective was to improve countries’ strategies and tools to reduce their emissions and improve adaptation in the agriculture, forestry and other land use (AFOLU) sector, addressing existing gaps in AFOLU components and resulting in more ambitious commitments and strategies.

Restoring the Earth - The next decade
    Unasylva No. 252 - Vol. 71 2020/1
    2020
This Unasylva issue aims at showcasing forest and landscape restoration (FLR) opportunities and recent developments that have the power to upscale restoration, in order to achieving the Bonn Challenge pledge and other national and international commitments (Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Convention for Biological Diversity (CBD) Post-2020 Agenda, the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) Land Degradation Neutrality, Paris Agreement under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)) and addressing the needs of the UN Decade 2021-2030 on Ecosystem Restoration. The content adresses thematics of relevance to various audiences: i) flagship restoration initiatives that differ from the so-called “business-as-usual” as they channel more funds, better empower local stakeholders and provide enhanced technical assistance through partners’ coalitions; ii) technical advances that can spread FLR and have a huge potential to be mainstreamed for different reasons (low cost, adaptability, relevance to many ecosystems and contexts, ease of implementation…); iii) the enabling factors for restoration, i.e. coordination, policy environment, resources, knowledge and capacities, as these are the enabling conditions for action to take place on the ground.

Mapping land cover in the Maputo and Gaza provinces in Mozambique
In the context of the Soil Land and Water Digital Information System initiative

This report presents a comprehensive land cover map of Maputo and Gaza provinces within Mozambique in 2022, highlighting cultivated land, banana, meadow and orchards. The land cover map was derived using Sentinel-2 satellite imagery, digital terrain model, a 2016 Mozambique land cover map and photo interpreted reference points. The area of each land cover class was generated to provide accurate information on land cover classes distribution to develop insights into natural resource management and agricultural practices. It supports assessing the status of natural resources and supports sustainable and resilient agricultural management with crop production. Land cover mapping within the SolaWISe initiative facilitates access to essential information on soil, land water and crop management, thus informing decision-making processes for enhancing agricultural productivity.

The State of Food and Agriculture 2019
Moving forward on food loss and waste reduction
    2019
The need to reduce food loss and waste is firmly embedded in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Food loss and waste reduction is considered important for improving food security and nutrition, promoting environmental sustainability and lowering production costs. However, efforts to reduce food loss and waste will only be effective if informed by a solid understanding of the problem. This report provides new estimates of the percentage of the world’s food lost from production up to the retail level. The report also finds a vast diversity in existing estimates of losses, even for the same commodities and for the same stages in the supply chain. Clearly identifying and understanding critical loss points in specific supply chains – where considerable potential exists for reducing food losses – is crucial to deciding on appropriate measures. The report provides some guiding principles for interventions based on the objectives being pursued through food loss and waste reductions, be they in improved economic efficiency, food security and nutrition, or environmental sustainability.
