    The leaflet presents the overall content of a technical paper on current scientific knowledge available on climate change implications for fisheries and aquaculture, as well as adpatation and mitigation responses. The leaflet is meant to announce the release of the technical paper. It is prepared on the occasion of an international symposium on climate change impacts on the world's oceans with the purpose to raise interest of the participants in the symposium. However, it can be used as a 2-page communication product on any international event where FAO publications are presented.

    The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) works towards ending hunger and poverty while using precious natural resources sustainably. The fisheries and aquaculture sector makes substantial contributions to food security, livelihoods and global trade. Global production of fish and other aquatic animals continued to grow and reached 172.6 million tonnes in 2017, and about 59.7 million people were engaged in the primary sector of capture fisheries and aquaculture. Fishery net exports generate significantly more revenue for developing countries than other agricultural commodities such as rice, coffee and tea. Millions of people are struggling to maintain reasonable livelihoods through the fisheries and aquaculture sector. These are the people who are the most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. Climate change adds to the many threats and obstacles that already confront them in their day-to-day lives. Particular attention must be given to the most vulnerable if the sector is to continue to contribute to meeting global goals of poverty reduction and food security. This publication presents FAO’s work on climate change and fisheries and aquaculture. It includes examples of FAO’s support to countries so that they are better able to adapt to the impact of climate change in the fisheries and aquaculture sector. It also brings together FAO’s most up-to-date knowledge on climate change, including a portfolio of adaptation tools and measures used to support countries’ climate commitments and action plans.

    Billions of people around the world depend on fisheries and aquaculture for food, essential nutrients and livelihoods. The sector is already under stress from pollution, habitat degradation, overfishing and harmful practices; climate variability, climate change and ocean acidification represent additional threats to the sector and dependent communities. FAO and its partners are working together to reduce vulnerabilities of those most dependent on fisheries and aquaculture for their existence by designing and implementing suitable adaptation and mitigation measures. FAO and its partners are working at finding solutions to meet an ever-growing demand for fish in an era of limited natural resources, build resilience and unlock the Blue Growth potential of the aquatic systems.

The present study was undertaken for the quadrennial review of FAO’s strategic framework and for the preparation of the Organization Medium-Term plan 2018-2021.

    This year’s report should dispel any lingering doubts that the world is moving backwards in its efforts to end hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition in all its forms. We are now only eight years away from 2030, but the distance to reach many of the SDG 2 targets is growing wider each year. There are indeed efforts to make progress towards SDG 2, yet they are proving insufficient in the face of a more challenging and uncertain context. The intensification of the major drivers behind recent food insecurity and malnutrition trends (i.e. conflict, climate extremes and economic shocks) combined with the high cost of nutritious foods and growing inequalities will continue to challenge food security and nutrition. This will be the case until agrifood systems are transformed, become more resilient and are delivering lower cost nutritious foods and affordable healthy diets for all, sustainably and inclusively.

Recognizing that the interactions between climate, crops and biodiversity are complex and not always well understood, the Plant Production and Protection Division of FAO has coordinated this review of the potential effects of climate change on crop pollination.
