Synopsis (short abstract) ASEAN-FAO cooperation on food security, agriculture, fisheries, forestry and sustainable development was first formalized through an exchange of letters between the ASEAN Secretariat and FAO from 1999-2000. Since then, FAO has been actively collaborating with ASEAN in a number of regional projects and activities. A Memorandum of Understanding between ASEAN and FAO was signed in 2013, under which the two Organizations agreed to strengthen cooperation in agriculture and forestry with the goal of r educing hunger in the region and improving food security, with a particular focus on collaboration in the areas of transboundary animal disease control, food safety, nutrition, food security and bioenergy development.

This publication aims to commemorate the partnership between the Government of Brazil and FAO within the scope of the Brazil-FAO International Cooperation Program in LAC, focusing on the main actors of the Government of Brazil (Ministry) and partner countries. FAO and other stakeholders in this initiative. It will highlight the main milestones of this innovative cooperation between Brazil and FAO, with the main results of the projects that were and are part of the history of cooperation. It will be written jointly between the technical area of FAO and the government of Brazil (Brazilian Cooperation Agency), to highlight the importance of this alliance in the Triangular (or trilateral) South-South cooperation modality where FAO and Brazil build and execute projects of means constant technical assistance, with reference to Brazilian public policies.

In 2012, the UN Secretary-General launched the global Zero Hunger Challenge. This was followed in 2013 by the launch of the Asia-Pacific region’s Zero Hunger Challenge on 29 April 2013 by the UN Deputy Secretary-General and the Executive Secretary of UNESCAP with the participation of Ministers and senior officials of UN Member States in the region, including Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão of Timor-Leste. The National Action Plan for a Hunger and Malnutrition Free Timor-Leste (known by its Tetum acronym PAN-HAM-TIL) was launched in Dili on July 20 2014.
