Brochure, flyer, fact-sheetCourse: Remotely sensed information for crop monitoring and food security 2016
Also available in:
No results found. This course describes how the information derived from remote sensing is obtained and best used for crop monitoring in a food security context. It outlines what the exact meanings of the products are and shows how their early warning and food availability information contents can be combined efficiently with other sources (e.g. households surveys, market analyses, nutritional surveys, etc.) -
BookletProceedings of the technical workshop Use of remote sensing and SEPAL platform in support to land, water and crop monitoring for sustainable agriculture in Arab countries
14-16 March 2023
2023Also available in:
No results found. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) provides technical support to countries and stakeholders to plan, implement and monitor land, water and crop resources. The Arab Organization for Agricultural Development (AOAD) provides assistance to 22 Arab countries in coordinating agricultural development, including on strengthening technical capacities on the use of GIS/RS. In this context, the Geospatial Unit of the Land and Water Division at FAO and the AOAD jointly organized a virtual technical workshop from 14 to 16 March 2023 on the use of remote sensing and SEPAL platform in support to sustainable land cover and crop type monitoring. -
Book (stand-alone)Remote sensing techniques for mapping and monitoring mangroves at fine scales 2024
Also available in:
No results found.Mangrove ecosystems play a critical role in harbouring biodiversity and providing a variety of ecosystem services. The need for developing better techniques for classifying and monitoring mangroves is increasing, especially with the growing demand in blue carbon markets. However, many countries are challenged by the need to improve their mangrove cover estimates to inform decision-making on coastal land use and to guide local conservation efforts including restoration planning. This manual was developed to help overcome this problem by providing guidance, specifically targeted to build capacity for mangrove resource managers on how to use and take advantage of the latest technologies in mapping and monitoring mangroves. It enables collection of data that informs conservation decision-making, guiding the planning of mangrove restoration and protection activities that will ultimately lead to enhanced management and conservation of mangroves. In addition, case studies are presented on estimating mangrove extent, structure, condition and change, using a range of remote sensing-derived sources that are focused on < 5-m spatial resolution.
